I work 4-10's with rotating shifts. Like this week I am on nights, so Thursday when I get off work I will stop and get beer and food for the weekend and head straight to the lake. Then I won't be back to work till the 25th. It will be awesome but burning all of that vacation in July make for longer winters.

I am lucky enough to control my own work schedule. I work hard and know if I sta an hour or 2 late it'll but me ahead for the week leaving a mid week fishing trip available. Almost went back to a 8 to 5, just couldn't give up my time. Job for today isn't ready so I'm off to the lake in a few minutes. Owning company and working for yourself is great when it goes well and when it suck you go fishing!

ive done 4 10"s and can say if you have kids, and life outside of work it is difficult to get the yard/snow removal done, house repairs, kids swimmng lessons, all while trying to stuff hunting harder on the wknds then you work during the week. 4 10's were perfect priro to children but now i work til about 11 or 12 on fridays whatever i need to get my 40 hrs. i am fortunate enough to be able to set my own schedule with patients so if i see the forecast and wanna fish thursday afternoon, i do, if i see its a snowy windy and howling wind on a nov morning and wanna hunt snow geese i do.

but working 10 hr days and taking care of the family was wearing me out.

Lincoln, kinda...
It's finally gotten so damn bad I am hiring a gal to mow my lawn and do other odds and ends that I just can't seem to get to lately.

Seems the best way for me to go fishing is to "buy" my time away.

This is what the big lake looked like heading out the other morning. I usually don't like calm days like that but the fishing was good.:)

I can tell you this. I will never go back to a 2 week on 1 week off schedule, or a Monday-Friday gig. I would average well over 100-105 hours a week, every week throughout the year while doing the oil thing. Yes, paychecks were absolutely insane and paid lots of crap off. A guy would think that a week off is enough, but when you are away from home for those 2 weeks, it takes a full week, or more, to get caught up on all the shit that wasn't done for the 2 weeks while a guy is working. There are lots of coal/gas plant jobs out there that are 4 days on, 4 days off, or 3 on, 4 off, 4 on, 3 off… and those are the jobs Im shooting for sometime in the future. Im still consulting in the oil field on and off, and while it pays the bills more than enough, I'd rather be home everyday, at least sometime and can still get some stuff done. I want to get more fishing and hunting in too, and my previous schedule just wouldn't allow it. Going back to school at 30 years old wasn't ideal, but I do believe it'll pay off in the end.
