Yesterday my fishing buddy managed to get his line in the boat prop and of course that stopped fishing for a while. After we got the line out of the prop he discovered that his Black Max reel didn't work anymore. The crank spun freely and the spool didn't turn. I'm guessing the plastic gear or gears are stripped but don't know much about that stuff. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and if the reel can be repaired? He really likes the real but like me doesn't know much about the guts of the reel. I tried you tube and there are several videos about replacing bearings and oiling the reel but nothing about repairing it. If it's repairable where can you get parts? Does anyone in the Bis/Man area do repairs?

Thanks Wags. I'm pretty sure he bought the reel at Scheel's as he has it on one of their Tournament rods.

They're cheap enough that you can just buy another one in the mean time. I need to get a couple silver max's for bouncing rods.

Pony,

Just a suggestion and you may have already done this, check to see if the star drag is tightened correctly. If it is too loose spool won't turn when handle is cranked. Sometimes if the star drag is loosened completely the star knob can sort of stick in the loose position and takes little effort to turn the star knob to tighten drag again....

Dirty,

I just ordered a Silver Max 3 LH retrieve off Amazon for 48$ including shipping. Apparently the 3 now has a 'rocket clutch' switch where the flipping switch used to be, basically the rocket clutch switch is pressed to take reel out of free spool when using one handed....
