Hello folks. I have been scoping out a piece of land in the Bismarck area. I'm kicking around the idea of opening a gun range where a person could do everything. I think there is room for a 1000 yard range, trap/skeet and sporting clays. Could easily do pistol, shorter range rifle, etc. Would even consider being able to hold 3-gun competitions. The easier things would open first, add the more novelty things over time as I build clientele. My question is, do you guys think there could be a market for this? Any and all suggestions welcome.

Well, BMPRA beat you to it. Their range between Bismarck and Moffit is an excellent facility and they're adding improving stuff every year. It's a membership-based program and a non-profit group.

If a guy could get something closer to town that's based on admission fees instead of a membership you might have a winner. Frankly, I think you have too much competition with free public ranges near both Bismarck and Mandan as well as a sporting clay club north of town and BMPRA already running a facility with short range, steel targets, cowboy shooting, 1,000 range, cooking, camping, bathrooms, and a meeting hall. Let's not forget 2 indoor pistol ranges in Bismarck (that I'm aware of.)

I'm all for more places to shoot. More power too you! My options in Fargo are a couple indoor pistol ranges, the Casselton minefield, and the Horace gun club (which is pretty neat.)

It would be closer and I was thinking admissions rather than a club.

No.

Trap range N of Bis doesn't use anywhere close to it's capacity.

I've never had a problem getting time @ CCSP N of Menoken either for 5-stand or the walk-through course by just showing up. If a guy had to call ahead and make an appt that'd be an indicator of need for more capacity.

Moffit has the LR guys covered, Glencoe has the pistol/tactical guys handled. The ranges S of Bis/Man and up E of Wilton offer the guys working up loads and sighting in hunting rifles all the spots they need.

You might be able to make such a place pay for the improvements that are necessary to put up the different targets, backstops, etc. The place will never pay for itself if you figure in the land $$.

I think SDMF sadly hit the nail on the head, It's a heck of a good idea but will it need to cash flow ? I can't remember where the trap range is North of town but if town is getting closer and that range is sitting on some good real estate maybe they would jump on board with you ? Just an idea. There is cost share funding out there if you look for it, There was at one time anyway, I just don't remember where. NDSSA, NDGF , NRA ? I like your Idea and share your enthusiasm for shooting sports, Don't give up without a good fight.

Steak fry night, a beer bar for after the shoot, a league night, men's and ladies night, kids event, sports clubs events, maybe classes offered on reloading, hunter safety, cwp, etc.
Way back when I was a fagroan the Horace club had a beer bar and some of the stuff listed above, it was a blast literally.
The seasons up here are short, so making a living at this would be the challenge

Don't forget the gun range just south of center about 4 miles too which is a public honor system pay what you may. Not to mention all who know a farmer who will let them shoot at all of their own spots.Thumbs Up

I think if you threw in a game farm where you could shoot birds too it would be a great deal. If you have enough land that is

160ac doesn't get you to 1K either unless you're going to shoot diagonal from corner to corner or you've got 1mi long x 1/4mi wide. 1/2Mi square is only 880yds long.

The layout blends itself nicely to diangle. I'm any case, I'm not going to run with anyway.
