41:06:04:03. Methods prohibited. A person may not establish, utilize, or maintain a bait station from August 1 through February 1 and from March 15 through May 31 to attract any big game animal, including wild turkey. A person may not use an electronic call if hunting any big game animal except a mountain lion.

Kind of looks like as long as you stop by Aug 1st. I don't quite get the March-May part turkey maybe?

Are food plots legal in S.D.?

About 1990 we were hunting geese up by Drake N.D. I was a wheat field that had caught fire before it was combined. We were in the field had decoys out and just pounding the geese. Now this field was black as everything burnt up. We took white sheets and layed them on the ground and walked on them when setting out the decoys. We layed under the sheets and the geese just piled in. The first day 5 of us limited out on geese all Snows and Blues. The 2nd day was going the same way till the Game Warden drove out to us. He gave us all tickets for hunting a baited field. We took it to court and the Judge threw it out. Said that is not baiting it was Mother Nature as know one knew how the field caught fire.

Food plots are legal. They got some guys because they hunted a spot a rancher had put salt licks out for the cows. Took it to court and lost bs deal as it was a ago practice not meant for baiting deer.

You must've been hunting the spot the warden had scouted for hisself but wasn't an early enough riser to get to before you.
