AR 10 for deer hunting or just fun

So let’s say you get a rifle with a 22” bbl. That’s 9.5-11 lbs naked. Add a loaded 10 rd mag, 12oz. Now your scope mount or rings will weigh 3-8oz. Scope will be anywhere from 12-40 oz. Plan on shooting off a bipod? add another 16oz. Silencer? 16oz

It’s very easy to talk yourself into a 15lb gun.

So, you want a “walking rifle” in an AR10? I keep mine light (no bipod, lightweight stock, scope, and rings) and it’s about 10.5 lbs loaded BEFORE I put a 1lb suppressor on. Mine has an 18” bbl. Yes, it’s my brush gun.

Also keep in mind, METAL IS COLD. It sucks to hang onto a cold, heavy gun while you’re hunting. I do it, just warning you.

Anybody using an AR 10 or a larger caliber in an AR platform? I maybe have an AR 15 that is just fun to shoot and I take coyote hunting every once in a while. I knew they had this platform in 308 but now I see you can get a 243, 7-08,6.5 creed in the AR platform. Thinking it would be a fun gun to add to the arsenal. Any thoughts on what caliber to go with?

I like my 6.8 Remington SPC. Great bush gun with a 16 inch barrel. Very light. I use 120 gr sst if I am walking for deer. I don't expect to shoot far with it. I have an eotech sight on it. Uses an AR-15 lower reciever so if you swap out the upper, you can gave a .223.

I too have a 6.8 spcII and use it as my doe gun. No long distance shots yet to speak of but it does a number on them under 200 yards. I use 115 grain Fusions. I have a .308 I still have to tweak that I put together but even with 18 inch barrel she is heavy. Real heavy.

I've been running an AR-10 in 243 for about 10 years, and I really like it for coyotes and deer -- I didn't own a bigger caliber until I had to shoot an elk last year.
However, it is about 15# loaded with suppressor and bipod, and not what most would consider a good "walking" gun. No matter what you do, an AR-10 is never going to be a truly lightweight gun.
I think when I eventually re-barrel, I'll be looking at Proof Research in either a 6 or 6.5 Creed. I think 22 inches is a good 'sweet spot' for the Creed, at least in an AR configuration.
