boat sat on a single ax trailer ---imo it looked like a lund fisherman series with maybe a 150 on it. I have hit a stump practically idling and it took everybody out of seats and a bump to my head.

noon news said boat was traveling around 30mph as stated by witnesses. bad deal hope the others pull through. I cant imagine how the operator feels after a accident like that.

And yes, it is a Lund Fisherman. I can't make out if it's a 17 or 18 ft hull though, doesn't matter. Top end on it is in the 40-45 range but the stories don't even make it sound like he was going WOT.

Again, uggh. I have hit sandbars at 10 mph and that's enough to make me cringe.

This is sad. If there is a silver lining, I hope it serves as a lesson to everyone about responsible boating.

Sheriff's report stated approx. 30MPH. One of the campers at Haybale Heights heard the crash and called 911. About 2:45am. Bad deal.

aluminum cans don't do well against solid objects! What was this guy doing going that fast near shore. If your boating at night the first thing you do is get away from anything you can hit that way all you have to do is watch for floaters and unlit craft. Running the river at night can pucker a guy up from time to time especially when you suddenly spot a pair of skinny dippers in the headlights in the middle of the river nowhere near where people should be!

Those pictures and the thought of drilling a tree on a lake going 30 mph are going to give me nightmares for a long time. Never seen anything like it. Not much a guy can say at this point. I think we all have done some damn stupid things at one point or another, so I am going to withhold judgement on the boat operator. Just hope the others are able to live through this mess and make a full recovery. Thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of the young lady. Terrible.

First off I was speaking more so about the light weight construction of most fishing boats whether they be aluminum or fiberglass. as far as the energy absorbed by the bending aluminum of the boat.... for the most part in situations like this does not come into play. for one to take advantage of the boat absorbing the energy of the impact just like in a car you have to be buckled in. if you arent buckled in all that is going to happen is the boat is going to stop moving and you're going to keep going until you slam into something to dissipate your own momentum and in this case it's going to be most likely the bow being ripped up in front of you or the tree itself.

Obvious deep thoughts and prayers to all those involved, cannot imagine what those involved are feeling and going through.. (Been through a vehicle accident where nobody got hurt and that alone took weeks/months to get over.) Devils lake can be an eerie place, a spotter on point is always an ABSOLUTE must; which is the case with any body of water but ESP this lake. Annnd ill stop right there..Just seeing those pics makes me visualize those eerily 1/2-3/4 sunken trees that can show up awful abruptly and i cannot imagine..

Horrible tragedy. Prayers to all involved. I can't imagine the torment the decision makers of the event will have to live with. The slim silver lining of our collective boating awareness is one I would rather read in Quincy post than like this. I like to fish to dark and the wife is always harping to get off the water sooner, dang I hate when she is right. I have to wonder what a fiberglass boat would look like? I am a bit confused, the tree was out in the water and not on shore where the boat was getting accidentally beached? I have been using my GPS as a guide and trying to track my path back, now I wonder if this isn't going to give me a false sense of security. My condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy.

You don't have to be buckled in to benefit from the decreased deceleration that a "crumpling aluminum can" provides. New cars are built that way and I'm quite sure there are many non-belted people alive today because of it.

Worm, the article I read said that this happened 200 yards SW of haybale campground. I think that means it was flooded trees right along shore. If I remember correctly the trees there dont come out very far there so I am thinking they were thrown from the boat into very shallow water or even onto shore. That is the only way I can see them surviving and not drowning
