With the price of everything going up, we’ve just bought 4 bred heifers on shares. Supporting a young rancher and we should see a little return on investment

Other than cheeseburgers from local eateries, I've not purchased actual beef since May-ish when the wife mentioned we should get a steak for my birthday.

Which I cooked myself.

It was pretty delish, but I gotta say, at that price I'd rather save my money and eat the wild game in my freezer.

Buy a butcher animals from a local producer, and have it processed at a local butcher. It costs you $9-$10/# of actual meet in your freezer. You can buy 1/4 beef up to a whole beef.

Why people decided to buy a majority of their meats from the big box stores is mind boggling. You pay for quality. And the quality of beef available within 100 miles of Bismarck is arguably some of the best in the entire world.

Finding a tender, marbled, trimmed beef steak from a Bis-Man grocery store is pretty near impossible! And you really pay big bucks!!

I get incredible beef direct from a local rancher. I can’t hardly do store bought beef anymore, it’s terrible and price isn’t that much less. That said, his capacity, and that of the processor, is limited. Everyone wants small local beef but there is no way the local trade can replace the massive capacity of packing plant. Packing plants now can hardly operate on a day to day beef basis and compete with import box beef. Tyson was incredibly losing money but with the basic cost of a steer it’s not hard to understand. It takes incredible capital to run those places. Everyone hates to hear it but I think without a correction in the cattle market decreasing demand will eventually make the correction occur. Prices of everything today are nuts and lots of folks just can’t afford it anymore.

What I see are the rancher that in there 50s, 60s and even older are selling out not just because of prices but their kids don't want to take it over. Why because of the long hours, hard work, and Money. Send the kid to a good University get an easy job for four times the wage and a 35, 40 hour week. Look down the road very easy choice.

We will all be stuck buying and eating foreign beef in not too many years. So as long as I can USA bred and raised quality beef I will NOT complain about price. Might not eat as much as I used to, but enjoy it as long as I can.
