With the price of everything going up, we’ve just bought 4 bred heifers on shares. Supporting a young rancher and we should see a little return on investment

Other than cheeseburgers from local eateries, I've not purchased actual beef since May-ish when the wife mentioned we should get a steak for my birthday.

Which I cooked myself.

It was pretty delish, but I gotta say, at that price I'd rather save my money and eat the wild game in my freezer.

Buy a butcher animals from a local producer, and have it processed at a local butcher. It costs you $9-$10/# of actual meet in your freezer. You can buy 1/4 beef up to a whole beef.

Why people decided to buy a majority of their meats from the big box stores is mind boggling. You pay for quality. And the quality of beef available within 100 miles of Bismarck is arguably some of the best in the entire world.

Finding a tender, marbled, trimmed beef steak from a Bis-Man grocery store is pretty near impossible! And you really pay big bucks!!

I get incredible beef direct from a local rancher. I can’t hardly do store bought beef anymore, it’s terrible and price isn’t that much less. That said, his capacity, and that of the processor, is limited. Everyone wants small local beef but there is no way the local trade can replace the massive capacity of packing plant. Packing plants now can hardly operate on a day to day beef basis and compete with import box beef. Tyson was incredibly losing money but with the basic cost of a steer it’s not hard to understand. It takes incredible capital to run those places. Everyone hates to hear it but I think without a correction in the cattle market decreasing demand will eventually make the correction occur. Prices of everything today are nuts and lots of folks just can’t afford it anymore.

What I see are the rancher that in there 50s, 60s and even older are selling out not just because of prices but their kids don't want to take it over. Why because of the long hours, hard work, and Money. Send the kid to a good University get an easy job for four times the wage and a 35, 40 hour week. Look down the road very easy choice.

We will all be stuck buying and eating foreign beef in not too many years. So as long as I can USA bred and raised quality beef I will NOT complain about price. Might not eat as much as I used to, but enjoy it as long as I can.

Man, something doesn't pass the sniff test. Ranchers aren't making enough and now, apparently, the packing companies aren't making anything either. Yet the price of beef is higher than ever. So who is making all the money off $9/lb 80/20 ground beef?

That question will send you into a rabbit hole you might not want to go down. I've done it. It's a spiderweb of distasteful realities and it didn't fill me with confidence. Check on the amount of imported beef for last year, who imported it, and the ease at which that imported beef can be labeled as "made in the USA". You won't like what you find.

About half the cost of buying meat in general is the processing side of the purchase. This was my second time i bought beef by the half, it was a real eye-opening experience this time since i bought it all my self and split it up with the family. It also has to do with less competition in choosing which butcher you go to, there are more competitive butcher shops in Minnesota which brings down the processing fee compared to here in North Dakota. Its not much of a difference but when you are spending a couple grand in meat every dollar helps. I ended up paying just shy of 9.50 a pounds but the meat was outstanding for price.

MCOOL repeal was done due to the WTO ruling. And that ruling is still the reason why it's hadn't been replaced regardless of president or political party in power. You can argue against the ruling but from what I've seen it's a tough one to get around without us seeing retaliatory tariffs.

I simply believe foreign beef gets sold here at close to domestic prices allowing those producers to profit rather than ours who face higher production costs. Cheaper input then sell at the price we need to cover domestic production costs.

And how much did that wild game cost per lb? Used to have some deer hunters that hunted my land, told me they were meat hunters. One always had to buy a new rifle for the season. Drove 50 miles just to come here to hunt and then did alot of road hunting. I told him I'd buy beef with all the money he spent to shoot a deer if meat was the goal.

Just picked our 1/2 yesterday. Per pound cost in my freezer was $5.20. 448# half. Local grocery store has 90/10 ground for $6.99/lb.
