I have always split the pelvis. On a big deer it's sometimes not that fun - especially alone.

I am now bunghole curious due to kdm's note on deer processing (pretty much exactly like mine but I use a gambrel).

So does one just cut around it and thus, when spilling the guts, it just pulls inside and ploop - yer done?

Tie it off from gut-side first so you don't lose deer pellets inside?

What about kibbles/bits? Skin them back, tie off, cut... so they go slooping back into the hole too?

Bunghole Class is now in session.

Lincoln, kinda...
I quit splitting the pelvis a couple years ago.

Instead, I either cut around and pull it out up through the abdominal cavity, or I just empty the lower intestine by "milking" the pellets out the back end.

Either way has proven to be acceptable. I hang the deer by a gambrel through the lower legs and end up cutting the hind quarter off the carcass in a bit of a dance as things get unbalanced when the first quarter comes off the carcass and the gambrel is holding a single quarter on one side and the other is holding the other quarter along with the remaining carcass.

and I wear nitrile gloves during the process.

ON a buck the kibble/bits seem too big to pull through the hole you created - you don't "lay those back" then tie/cut them too? Or do they fit through?

A stray pellet is one thing - buck piss is another.

quarter, loin, strap, head and leave the rest in the field aka gutless method. I can't taste a difference in hung deer sausage vs unhung. No bunghole was harmed in this method.

Never heard her having any issues

but then I don't get to go out in the garage and look at it adoringly for 7-10 days

sometimes I just sit down with a beer and "be present" with it

does that make me weird?

Of all the weird things you do, this one is pretty mild.

I haven't gutted a deer in years. Its all gutless now. But when I would gut them I would skin the 'kibbles and bits' to the bunghole. Then cut in a circle around everything. Then gut the animal and as long as you did a good job corn holing it everything pulls right through. I've never split a pelvis in my life.

Agreed. It’s not weird to admire your prize. I do the same thing when I get a really nice gun. Or a really cheap gun. Or a lot of ammo. Just sit out in the garage, enjoying my prize, pointing it at passers by and yelling obscenities.

Only if you have an erection while "being present"

Gutless method is the only way to go , no blood, take game bags with you and put the meat in there and away you go , it cools while you keep hunting if you have more than one tag. The first time I brought it up my son thought I was nuts , now he has to agree with me how well it works

I keep thinking I should try it

but when it's 8 degree and blowing 30 MPH butchering in the snow by yourself seems so unsavory vs. a 10 minute field dress

I do both, gut and/or just field butcher. Depends on where deer was shot. If on public...im getting too old to deer cart or drag out. If private I take whole deer cuz can drive up to it. I tend to get a lot more meat if I hang whole deer.

Same here I havent gutted a Deer in over 20 yrs. Take them home string them up and skin it. Then bone it out hanging up. Anything I want to age I put in a old fridge for 5 to 8 days. The rest is Sausage and that goes into gallon size zip lock bags. Back under it with the pickup and its Coyote bait.

The meat is always clean, no grass or hair or piss to worry about.

Used both the hanging and the gutless dressNpack methods this year in the badlands with the guys.

The gutless method is awesome and quick and clean, especially if you have a few guys to split the work and pack load.

If i gut its 1000% sagnSaw time, 2 qwik cuts on either side of the pelvis and the Sageballs and doebuster just slide right out , makes the kibble cannon easy to cleanly deal with.

This makes it cleaner for a windpipe pull and smooth degutting as well as draining the blood.

makes a nice hang and easy to work the meat at process time.

Once suckered for the butt-out tool... not a friendly.
