With it on-line they can now insure you have what you need to NOT be in violation. Most people would see that as a good thing.

Its $51 for the sportsmans license which included everything , fishing , gen game etc....

I get that but he stated it's $51 to go afield for ND residents that only hunt big game and that's clearly not the case. It would be $20 for the General Game and Habitat plus $1 certificate fee. That $20 is also the primary funding for the PLOTS program so it's probably money well spent.

It should read to deer hunt. $30 tag along with general and fee.

The only logic to doing this is looking at it from a fiscal standpoint. If you require deer hunters to buy their small game/general game before the end of the fiscal year, they have a better idea of income for that fiscal year. If a percentage wait until November to buy the sg/gg those funds go on the next fiscal years books. That and if they get your cash earlier, the interest from whatever account it goes in will add to the fiscal year cash flow as well. I might be way off here, but that's the only thing I can come up with that addresses logical reasons.

Another twist to think about, every year when you review the hunt data there seems to me that there are more and more people who get a tag that don't hunt. Maybe it is to assure those "tree-huggers" who draw a tag still have to pay the fees?

I know that this happens because I have had that conversation with people who apply who I know don't hunt and told me that they won't hunt. I also happened in the Wyoming grizzly draw, two known animal right people drew tags and there was a big push right before the deadline encouraging non-hunters to apply to "save the grizzlies".

Just food for thought?

The fiscal year ends June 30. Was the draw even held by then?

I doubt this is the case. If those tree huggers draw the tag it is out of the pool whether they buy the Gen game tag or not... It's not like they look at all the tags that didn't actually get issued and then have another drawing for them...

I think everyone is looking way too deep into this... I think it's done because they want to be sure that all people are in compliance and paying the required fees.

Thought ND was like the feds and goes from Nov 1 to Oct 31st. Learned something new today. Thanks!! In that case I can't see any logical reason other than to impose more restrictions and requirements on people.

Holding back the deer tags from mailing until the other license is purchased is stupid, petty and juvenile. If they are so concerned about compliance, they should just charge people's card when they draw the tag and haven't yet purchased a general license. Then mail all the tags out at the same time.

it is somehow insulting at its core - I just can't quite put my finger on why it rubs me the wrong way

Its government, and that's how they roll. The more paper they can push is job security.

It rubs you wrong because like most, you are responsible and have integrity. The G&F started doing this due to the group of folks who don't fall into that category and to the rest of us it feels like they are treating us like children. It still annoys me when I get robo calls and text reminders from my dentist about an upcoming appointment even though I have NEVER missed one in my life. Unfortunately it seems that being responsible for one's own life is a value instilled upon fewer people all the time.

I don't know, our license fees seem pretty damn cheap to me. The license fees themselves are literally the cheapest part of hunting. Even one tank of gas to actually go hunting is more expensive.

I fish/hunt year around in this state for $125. That includes Combo license, deer bow, rifle, spring turkey.
This attitude got the prices raised by %50 a few years ago. Why would anyone ask for a price increase. I’m not blame my you, I just don’t understand the logic here. Not sure where I heard this but our G&F has one of the biggest per capita money surpluses in the US. They don’t need more money.

$51 to hunt a deer that you have, potentially, 98 days to harvest (assuming archery). If you capitalized on that, it costs 52 cents a day to pursue your passion. But that's probably unrealistic, so let's just say 10 days afield for the season for the average archery dude in Nodak. That means $5/day to hunt deer with stick and string.

I dunno man...pretty cheap fun if you ask me. A Busch Light at the local bar is more than $5.
Yup. Let’s raise prices!!! There’s a great idea. Unreal...

We are always bitching on here about hunting turning into a rich mans sport then we come on here and basically ask for higher license fees.

How in the hell did you misconstrue what I wrote as a means of asking for higher license fees?? All I'm saying is that, if you truly loving hunting and fishing, the price the state charges at it's current rate is pretty reasonable. Especially if that's all you do.

Well the reason the prices were increased believe it or not was from all the banter on fishingbuddy about how cheap licensing is. G&F read that, had some townhall meetings and every believe it or not everyone thought it was one hell of an idea. Boom %50 increase. You didn’t say to increase prices. I apologize for jumping you like that. Had a weak moment.

But really it was this kinda talk that got the prices increased. They will be going up again guaranteed. I for one love higher prices. Like I said it’s a weak spot.
