WACONIA, Minn. -- An ice fisherman using an underwater camera Tuesday led to the recovery of the body of a man who went missing Nov. 26 while paddleboarding on Lake Waconia.

Lt. Patrick Barry of the Carver County Sheriff’s Office said the body of Andrew John Stifter, 35, of Waconia, was recovered about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Barry said the ice fisherman using an underwater camera spotted the body and alerted police. The Carver County sheriff’s dive team then recovered the body from under the ice.

“It’s sad, but I think it certainly helps the family and starts the healing process,” Barry said.
According to a GoFundMe page, Stifter was married and had two young children. His wife is expecting their third child in early May.

Stifter had gone to Lake Waconia to photograph wildlife from his paddleboard on Nov. 26 when he went missing. Sheriff’s deputies found Stifter’s paddleboard upright and anchored offshore, with a personal flotation device tethered to the front of the board.

Barry said the cause of Stifter’s death is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected

That will interrupt a day of fishing. Would not be fun, but at least he was found.

When that guy jumped off the railroad bridge in Bismarck, causing his death, I didn't go to the river until he was found in order to avoid that situation.

Paddleboarding on Nov 26th? I wonder what the water temp was? Dangerous........

I thought the same thing. The temp of the water probably took his breath away when he hit the water. I went knee boarding in September once and the water was in the low to mid 50's. I had a life jacket and it was darn cold when I wiped out. My skin was so numb when I got in the boat, I could barely feel it when touched.

That guy ended up floating by Freddy's if i remember correctly. They spotted him off the deck and a jet skier went out and tethered him up and called police. Finding a dead body is not something i ever want to do.

I'll pass, given my choice. Thought I found a human body one spring in the Sheyenne while chasing early walleyes below one of the low head dams in Valley City. Saw a white hairless shape being rolled over and over in the back current right below the dam. Got a sinking feeling in my gut when I saw it and walked over. Turned out to be a deer that had lost it's hair and most of it's lower extremities, so it looked a lot like a person from 40 yards. Didn't feel much like fishing after that, so I went home.

I have been unlucky enough to see two find and recover operations in the Red. Horrible sick feeling. You don't go fishing, you go home after that.

was coming back to the boat landing one time on the river in Bismarck and was in between the bridges, seen what looked to me like a head of a person bobbing.. Turned out to be a dark blue bowling ball with light colored swirls (looked just like hair/skelp) .. Had the hair standing on end when i pulled up to it.. :|

No thanks glad the guy was found. Another reason not to bring the camera with on the ice.

You are correct.

Actually, I believe a person on a jetski spotted the body, and a boater tied a rope to it and pulled it to the sandbar just south of the Expy bridge. The boater is the father of a coworker.

Ick. I've had ample time while fishing, to think of what I'd do if I discovered a body. I guess just alert the authorities, and stay near it. If it's floating or drifting, try to secure it somehow.

Something I hope I never have to actually address.

The story at the time was the guy on the jetski pulled it in and for doing that good deed got reprimanded by the authorities for doing so! Think he said something about not wanting to loose the body for the family sake or something logical like that.

That would be about possible crime scene preservation.
