Ok, everything appears to be believable except the taking control of an ant part. It's probably true, but hard for me to fathom.

I think he took liberties with that by linking different parasite lifecycles. There ARE zombie ant scenarios where low complexity lifeforms (fungus of all things) take control of brains/behavior of ants. Amazing stuff that evolution. Ha ha.

I never let the bastages get that far. After I returned from missions to adverse locations and felt queasy, instead of going through the rigemarole of paperwork to get a prescription, I'd just get a shot of Ivermectin from the vet and that took care of everything.
