Was fishing by the Drayton Dam one spring. It was full of out of staters mainly from Iowa. Those guys all swore the cats out of the red were the best tasting fish around, they told us we should use our walleye for cut bait.
I've no idea as I've never eaten catfish. I'm not to fussy, but I do think perch are better than walleye. I've eaten small mouth bass out of Lake of the Woods and thought they were just as good as walleye. Crappie and Blue gill are also really good. Northerns I prefer pickled or canned.

I know it tough for walleye folks to believe but walleye are not the top species everywhere
Correct..especially down south. Figured red snapper or something else...other then catfish would be more popular. I do know they like catfish..just not to this extent.

I guess there has been some pretty wicked illegal fishing busts in Ohio for various species, perch has been a big one. Illegal or over harvest paddle fishing has been another in Oklahoma.

Channel cats from cold clear water taste good.
flatheads and other bottom feeders, I'm not a fan of.
Poachers fishing in Ohio beware, DNR moves their officers around the state with the seasons. Fishing the west end of Erie in the spring, expect to be visited by DNR.

You are a lucky man. Some fellows from Tennessee I think lost their truck, freezer and gear for over limits.
Well I didn’t have to worry I’m sure as hell not taking over my limit of something I can get out my back door. I have never kept a fish out there wanted a 13 pounder didn’t get it.

whatever cats are in the mo --- those taste excellent. I dont want em to big either. Red --- like i said this past weekend (the filets glowed in the dark) the shit that flows north out of fargo, GF and Winnipeg I said boys you can have them. I watch the amount of mercury i eat -- i had enough ahi burgers in december i have to lay low on fish for a while.

The best tasting channel catfish on the Planet are "just" below the Garrison Dam Tailrace and are caught with nightcrawlers. They are the best as they have "zero" taste due to the cold, clean water. Period. Full stop. (bleed in ice, fillet, trim all red meat and zip--Why do we say "fee-LAY" and French pseudo-commies say fill-ETT?)

That is all.

A lot of catfish eaten in the south. I eat a bunch of different species of ocean fish when down there. Snapper species, trigger fish, tripletail, redfish etc. The sides and the sauces in the south make the meal in my opinion. The gumbos and etouffees are delicious. Add in some dirty rice, fried okra, and collard greens or fried green tomatoes. Maybe some red beans and rice. They know how to eat. Ready to make our 6th trip to Alabama here shortly. Love it down there…..plenty of oysters as well.
