I know roof trusses in our area are designed to take a load of snow, but how much is too much and you need to shovel it off?

get two kids about the same weight throw one kid on one side of the roof ,throw the other on the other side of the roof, give them a shovel and tie a rope around their waists. Don't forget to get your wife's facebook live feed just in case

I usually climb up there when the snow looks like itll slide off on its own, approximately 6"-12". not a lot of fun, but it saves on the roof and gutters.

If you can't find two kids of the same weight then I guess one of these will work to.

The wind in western ND usually takes care of our house. I have a tidal wave looking drift coming off the westside garage door. I am guessing its about 3 ft thick, and hanging over the gutter by about a foot. Will be neat to see how long she hangs in there.

I have got an ice dam from hell this year. I know the insulation and ventilation needs to be addressed. Any ideas on how to remove hundreds of lbs of ice from the gutter?

My house is protected from the main wind which means it swirls and creates 4 to 5 ft drifts. Problems arise from that much heavy packed snow, usually creeping up under the shingles and causing leaks. Between my son and l we're semi-pro at keeping the snow at bay
on the straight angle parts of the roof we use a roof rake with a plastic slide attached and shovel the rest.
slide rakes are the bomb

For ice dams: This doesn't eliminate them but it does allow drainage. Take a nylon stocking and fill with ice melt. Tie on some fishing line for retrieval. Throw onto the dam and it will create a channel through it.

Possible negatives are the salt damaging shingles or if the salt drains into the yard and kills the grass. It's worked for me other than the weird looks you get when you just buy women's nylons and ice melt from a store.

Roof rakes are good but I saw an awesome youtube video of an avalanche rake as well. Thing looked legit. I'm old school and just get up there with a shovel. Had 4-5 feet of snow on the SE corner of my roof over Christmas and shoveled it all off. Best part was the drift on that side of my house was up to the roof so I just jumped off when I was done.

For ice dams, buy that heating cable for roofs. Run it the length of your gutter and down the gutter. Might have to wait till next year to install. Worked good for my old house.

Does this work well on hard packed snow or do you have to get it right away while it is still soft?

Potassium chloride in panty hose is safe for shingles and plants, so they say compared to run of the mill ice melt for ice dams

I have a roof rake, and it's not as much fun as it looks. It's darn hard work, when the drifts have hardened.

The big overhanging wind-curls are neat to look at, but they put a huge amount of torque on your gutters. I always knock them off. If you've ever wondered how your gutters ever get loose... well, there you are.

Wonder if that saw thing would work well. It's a neat idea. Would want to be careful not to break any plastic vents on your roof.

We have 850 ton in a bin at work. It is just like any other fertilizer, it will corrode anything over a given time. And in high concentrations it will kill your grass.

You have to push a little harder but it still works good . My neighbor had three weeks of packed snow that we took off with little problem last week

If the ice dam is close to a hot water spigot, wait for a day above freezing and take the hose to it. The will break from from the gutters and you can throw the chucks out by hand. This is what I do. I also put the heat tape in.

Would a 12pack of Busch light, and a full bladder work the same, iffn I was to perch on the roof for a couple hours?
