we are gonna remodel our kitchen and replace an electric wall oven and electric cooktop with a new gas oven-range...

question - there's a 2 220 volt circuit for each piece... it's an old house and we need more outlets, so can we split those 220's and get 2 110's per if we chang out the breakers???

thanks all...

I'm no electrician, but I have a similar setup in my garage. Its wired for a 220 outlet for an air compressor in the future. Currently it just has a 20 amp outlet in the box with only 1 "hot" leg hooked up. The breaker only has one "hot" leg hooked up also.

Depending on your set-up, it might be possible.

Yes it is possible. The 220 you have there includes a neutral and 2 hots. I would recommend having an electrician come out and take care of this and get you what you need. Bad things can happen when people don't know what they are doing.

Not saying this was his fault but I heard he was removing a dishwasher and someone did not disconnect the power properly. Sad deal. Electricity is no joke! Respect it. You owe it to yourself and your family.

I pulled out a 220 outlet in my shop to change the outlet to a different pattern and was surprised to see only 3 wires, I thought 220v had 4 wires?

I have 220 in the far corner of the yard and have always wondered if I could make an extension cord that had 110v outlets.

Not an electrician but another consideration is the gauge of the wire leading to the 220 outlet. guessing it's either 10 or 12. pretty heavy for kitchen outlets especially if you're going to use a 20 amp breaker for a 110 line. if it were me I would be calling an electrician.

Nothinh bad about gauge being too heavy. Its when its too light that bad things can happen. Like fires and shit.

Good to know that wire can't be too heavy. I'd also like to add the bad things happen when you don't know what you're doing. Sometimes professional help is worth the money. Not long ago I remodeled a kitchen and removed the wall oven. Didn't pay any attention to what they did with the old oven wire. I do know the breaker for the oven was removed and replaced with 2 110V breakers for additional circuits. Wish I knew what happened to the wire.

I had an extension cord, very light gauge one in one of those wind up wheel things for easy rolling them up and storing them. Well I unwound about 20 ft of a hundred ft cord and plugged my 5th wheel in to cool it down and load the fridge. That light cord carried the current and turned that wheel deal into a melted mess. The electricity going through that under gauged wire was apparently very hot, as the entire set up was on piece when I finally noticed the air quit running.

Don't short cut anything, this was luckily just in my driveway, and not in the walls of my home.
