Last week when I was out I saw several different ways to fish going on and all produced. Jigs/minnows, Lindy’s/minnows, casting shiver minnows and pulling cranks. Over the last 25 years in the fall my most consistent means to take fish has been cranks at 1.8-2.2 mph. And 90% of the fish were taken with reef runners. In spring they like a tighter vibrating crank but fall they like the lazier action of the reef runners in my experience. And the depths very. But the majority of the fish, and biggest were running cranks down at 25-28, over 30-40’ of water. They suspend off the short structure chasing large schools of baitfish. Running cranks just below the baitfish has been the most successful for me but if they’re not hitting that raise them up to within the cloud of baitfish or just above. You don’t catch big numbers of fish like you do in June/July but you catch bigger fish usually. Many years ago I had three straight weekends where I caught 2 29” fish each weekend pulling cranks in October. But there have been a fair number of trips where jig and minnow worked amazing
