I love slush pockets! When you unexpectedly drive into one you have the "oh shit, this is it, we're going in" feeling and then you drive out the other side and are immediately relieved until you fall into the next one 100 yards later. It just cant be matched.

And the smell of shit in the air.

I haven't been in a rush due to the snow. I hate snow covered ice. Early ice that has no snow on it can be pretty readable. Snow covered early ice makes me less than excited.
.

Yeah the snow definitely gives people a false sense of security

If you go through the thing you have to remember to to is kick your legs till your body is parallel to the surface. Then all you have to do is slide back onto the ice instead of trying to lift you and your water logged clothes vertically using your elbows.

I learned in the spring of 2014 or around then. it was a mild spring and we were having a good go at the snows. we crippled one and it landed on frozen sheet water. my dog was abeast at the time and I sent him on the long retrieve luckily we had others I needed to round up so I followed him. I saw the goose made it to this honey combed ice but my dog wouldn't come off his command and went after him he broke through and after what seemed like an eternity he was panting and could barley keep his head up aboveand his front paws on the ice. I made the quite stupid descison to go after him. I didn't think sheet water could be deep....well think again I obviously knew I would break through and I did. ( the air temp was approaching 70 that day) anyhow I broke in the same spot he did and for what seemed like an eternity I couldn't touch and shit flashed before my eyes. next thing I know I'm touch water up to my nipples. I shove my dog up I crawl up off the ice and head for the trucks. I stripped to my undies before heading in so my clothes stay dry but the feeling of helplessness is no joke.

I will not venture out on sketchy ice, and I learned no goose, fish, anything is worth your life or a pup. a game warden can write me for want and waste 12x I will not risk that again.

stay safe fellas!!

In my 27 plus years being in the fire service, I have been involved in many recovery operations all over the State of ND and outside of the state. 99.9% of the tragedies could have been prevented if the individual would have just given it just a little more thought before venturing out on early ice. I was one of those early ice guys until i spent 9 days on the ice looking for a person that had fallen threw thin ice and watching the family suffer the whole time while we searched for their loved one.

All I am trying to say is that think before you do, because if something goes bad your loved ones are going to suffer for the rest of their life and wonder why this happened.

Stay safe everyone and enjoy the great outdoors!

Holy fucking shit. One more time, Holy fucking shit! Did u really just say that? Did u just make that sound easier than it really is. Have u ever fallen through and been successful with this life saving technique? Oh wait, my fault, of course u have, Ur Dean Nelson. Most people that fall through succumb to the shock and surprise of what's happening, most don't think straight, panic and drown. Suppose u have givin cpr to an newborn calf as well.

Hopefully you're dressed in layers to avoid the immediate cold shock and enough air is trapped to keep you buoyant for enough time to properly react as above.

God bless that kid and the families involved.
