Ok, thought my title would help. Im looking at buying a boat and would like to get a few pointers on what to buy. I would like to get an opportunity to go out and fish on a boat with someone and learn/ask a few questions. If anyone is willing to help me out Ill be more than happy to compensate you with the beverage of your choice.

I think your on the right track. Every type of boat has its pluses and minuses. Price range, family size, type of fishing, bodies of water you fish may make your ideal boat differnt then someone elses. Probably check back in a month or two when there is open water and im sure a few would be willing to take you out. If you want to make it down to Bis id take you out on the Missouri as soon as its open. I have a older Lund pro V. Its great for the river and smaller lakes, when it gets ruff on the big lake those glass boats do make me jelouse.. But not having a payment makes up for it.

Where are you located? I am tough to pin down on when, but you can surely ride with me and my 2004 Lund Fisherman. Solid boat when it comes to aluminum hulls.

I run a 97 Alumacraft Trophy 185 you can jump into if you're in the area. We fish Stump Lake, Ashtabula, or Devils Lake the most. PM if you have time or are in the Valley City Area.

Where will you be doing the majority of your fishing and what is your budget. That will help answer a lot of questions. I have a 2000 Lund Tyee that I just got late last summer. Haven't even had it on the river yet. Getting excited for spring!

Hard to beat a jon boat. Have an 04 12ft Jon that can be tossed in the back of a pickup. Good for rivers, small lakes (with or w/o ramp), and tribs of large bodies of water.

Good suggestions on this site. It depends where you do most of your fishing. I fish in a 20' fiberglass because I spend a lot of time on Sak. If all I fished was the river, probably would go aluminum. Either boat would have a windshield because I am too old to rough it. Check with Me this summer if your interested in a glass/20' boat. Seems like every time I buy a different boat, it's bigger. I will be in a yacht pretty soon.;:;banghead

I have a 1785 yar-craft tiller & fish the river, oahe, and a few smaller lakes. If you ever make it to the Bismarck area this spring you can jump in for a test ride/fishing trip.

Why don't they make a boat with council steering with a quick connect steering/controls where you can run it either tiller or wheel ? Or do they ?

I have a wheel boat with a tiller kicker, the drawback I have is my electronics are at the console. That and I have a single console whith the winshield removed and still have a hard time seeing over it from the back.

Thanks for all the replies. First, Im in Minot. I lived in Grand forks for 10 years before this and had all kinds of places to shore fish. I work at The Outfitters in Minot an since I'm surrounded by fishing stuff all day all I want to do is fish. So I started looking early and found a nice deal on a yarcraft and was ready to jump on it until I started talking to my wife. She said would it not make more sense to have a boat with a windshield? The boat I was looking at only had a SC. I plan on fishing SAk, DL, River, and some of the small lakes as well. I want to stay under 15k. I will always have my dog with me and my son who is 13 and growing everyday. It would be nice to be able to jump off the boat and go for a swim and thats going to be my extent of fun. I will never ski and maybe tow a tube once a year.

Ive got a sc with out a winshield. When the weathers nice its great! Kids dog can run around freely. When im at speed it doesnt bother me but most passengers have to ride with their heads down. On ruff days which we live in ND it can be cold and wet. Wipeing bug splatter off your fore head is a pain as well.
