if you've never blown a short reed before I would suggest starting with a cheaper call like a buck gardner Canada hammer. short reeds aren't incredibly challenging to learn but I've known plenty of musically challenged people who go with the 200.00 t.g. call only to sell it to me for half price because they suck so bad. . . . . . on second thought you should probably get a really expensive call.:;:thumbsup

and also the whole concept of "broke in guts" imo is a hoax as well. all they are is a groove or machined notch in the tone board that "was broke in by the pros" in reality if you use a call for a year or two the vibration from the reed will wear a channel into the board hence "breaking it in" to your own style of calling and air pressure. don't let the Kool-Aid crowd fool ya

I shave all my own reeds also.

Getting pumped not just for early goose, but for hunting in general! My goal one day this fall is to shoot limit of geese and or ducks, then proceed to shoot 3 pheasants, and then finish the day with some fall walleyes. Triple slam challenge anyone? Haha

Did that many, many years ago. We (2 of us) limited out on our ducks and each day had at least 3-4 geese then got a limit of walleyes for 6 days straight. Was done on Missouri south of Bismarck. Shot the birds in the lost lake area south of McClean Bottoms, this was a year you could drive a boat back there and we would scare the ducks off at daylight and it was unbelievable how many ducks were back there and as they trickled back we would get out limit then get out of there and get out limit of walleyes. A few of the days we were done by 1100 and could have been home by noon. First few days was only us, by end of week there was at least 8-12 boats back there and I think the pressure got to be to much and the birds found other areas. Was one of those times you know why you love to live in ND. we didnt do pheasent at that time I think because the season wasn't open yet, not positive that was a long time ago

I was thickening the same thing. Freaking 90s. Might want to turn a spray paint a big Yeti cooler like a goose and have it full of ice so the birds don't rot before the hunt is through.

Forget about the birds, I want a Yeti layout blind for myself to stay cool!!

I got money that says a lot of birds will be so shellshocked after the a.m hunt and itll be so warm out they wont even come out to feed Saturday afternoon. or they will do the fly off the roost and fly a giant 8 mile circle and land back on the roost for the night B.S. could be tough finding a field for sunday

Oh they will have to feed with their metabolism so high with the heat but like you said god knows where that may end up with there normal pattern blown up. This time of year they have little problem saying screw it and go back to eating aquatic plants once again or grazing on shore grass.

So is anyone still going out on Saturday . Where I am the morning high is going to be 80 when the sun comes up. How long would it take for the meat to spoil in this weather. Good news is Sunday looks much better!

I'm still going, but I'm trading my blind for a camo kiddie pool filled with ice water.

Bird flights were crazy fast this morning. Went form no birds in any of the fields I've been watching to all birds out and feeding in literally 2 minutes. Six different groups all doing the same thing. My guess is they didn't feed long last night so were starving by morning. Fields with three or four hundred birds that would normally give you numerous small flocks coming off over an hour or two came off far more like snows. One way or the other its probably going to be a quick one in the morning....after first flight will just have to hope to get some of the displaced birds to give a look.

I won't be hunting but there will be thousands of birds shot. People will hammer their limits both days and post pictures. I will put money on that.

Some may shoot a limit but that will the exception is my guess. 15 birds is allot of birds especially for groups with more then two shooters. Love to see and even more so do it but odds say hope for 5 to 8 per gun and be happy for any. Wonder how many gallons of blood will be lost by all the hunters to the mosquitoes?!

Grounds has the unique sound that the others don't,max range or close in finishing its a great call once you learn it.I 'll say this, for the novice to even the experienced caller, early honkers respond well to the good old stand bye flute...Big River has the deep sound, easy to cluck and finish.
