I am kind of hit or miss on the hotel tipping as I too will most often hang the "leave me alone" sign, but tend to think I am well above the normal in tipping my wait staff. This is just sound drinking philosophy if you are a regular in a place, and I have a couple places where I am warmly greeted by the help.

Restaurants ..... 0-50% depends on the service and occasion

Motels 0 %..... until the day my renters tip me when they leave, instead of trashing my real estate.

One rents for the night one rents for a longer period of time.

Also, there is a big difference between wages of a motel maid and a waiter/waitress IMHO

IMO tipping is BULLSHIT. Its the business owners way of getting out of paying their employees a decent wage....

That said, I do usually tip between 10 and 20%, rarely more because as an institution, I feel it sucks and by participating I am allowing it to continue. Best thing for service employees would probably be people not tipping at all, so they can demand fair compensation from their EMPLOYERS, instead of subsidies from the customers.

Rant over! :;:sorry

I've never tipped in a hotel before, never even thought about it before this thread. For restaurants I normally tip around 20% but have no problem dropping to 10% for mediocre service.

I walk in with the intention of tipping 20% at restaurants. It goes up or down from there based on service. Generally at or above that 20% mark though. $5 per night is my standard at hotels. If the hotel is clean and they're not rifling through my stuff, they earned a fiver in my opinion. Ah, progress. Funny how a shortage of lodging in certain parts of ND lowers a man's standards of good service. Don't rob me or give me bed bugs and I'm happy.

I stayed in a motel last week and there was a envelope with the cleaning ladies name on it and it dawned on me I need to ask the NDA crowd what they do and have come to a conclusion that most don't tip their maids. Thanks for the posts guys

Food service or tar bender 10-15%,zero for motel, but I usually stay in the cheap seat as long as its clean, have a shower and cable t.v.,i'm good.Never stay in a hotel tho,I like the small motels where I can back into the door and unload my goods and dog~

Not sure about guide service tho? whats the norm? Buddies that use outfitters in Canada tell me they tip the guides $100 from each hunter, that seems excessive but then again they have deep pockets,my pockets are deep but I have short arms when it comes to money.

Gun clubs,I tip the trap kids a few bucks unless its automated.

Of course it depends on service for the most part but I usually stay above 25%-30%. It's just one of those things when you are around that sort of business that's kinda what happens. I also try and tip in cash whenever possible. And in a hotel I usually leave a 20 on the bed when I leave.

I understand why they like cash tips but I have to pay taxes on everything I make. So I don't feel bad when I tip with card.

As a Former deck hand in Alaska, Tips averaged $75.00 to $150.00 per paying client on the boat for a 3 day trip. Unsure about average on a guided hunt. I average $200 to $400 for a week trip. I only tip the cleaning staff at a hotel the ones in my pocket and change.....Restaurants are based on service and quality of food. Usually 10-25%.

I usually leave a seven dollar pair of underwear for the maid to sniff. I'm full of myself like that.

They still don't have to claim that. FYI

Have done everything from dish washing to cooking, general manager and owner in the restaurant business. I tip based on service and if the place is busy, is lousy service the servers fault or the dip sh** manager with his head up his arse. Having been in food service for 20 some years, I can usually tell whose fault it is 99.99% of the time. Go to any city with a 15.00 minimum wage and how much does that Big Mac cost now?

Hotels, I always hang the go away kid, ya bother me sign and don't trash anything or make a mess, etc.... always stay at the cheaper places so usually do not think of tipping. The one cruise I was on it was not allowed and I am pretty sure our stay at one of the Disney resorts was built in. I suppose I would lean towards 10-15% or 5 -10 a night.

I always feel sorry for a waitresses that is swamped and doing their best and I tip them better. Others that seem to think they can get away on good looks and don't have to try often get less than what they think they deserve, I have no problem saving "their" tip money to double up and make someone's day that is swamped and working hard and doing their best. Ever notice how often sometimes the less people in a restaurant the crappier the service is ? Bugs me when waitresses stand around visiting when I'm finished eating and sitting there waiting for my ticket.
Also, I don't know why it is but I would rather see a female working construction than have a male serve me in a restaurant.
