So we (I think most are in agreement) think that we don't have enough good habitat on the ground. Without state or federal incentives to landowners to leave land as wildlife habitat, do we think this will ever change?
The only way i see it changing is on a small scale in that some people who aren't farmers are buying land almost exclusively for hunting as they are getting tired of not having land to hunt. I could maybe see north dakota going the way of hunting leases where multiple people go together to buy some land for hunting and improve habitat but generally they will already be buying land that is decent habitat. We just cant compete with cropland rent.

Three guys tried that south of Beulah purchasing 3 quarters. They rented the majority out and put in habitat on some. It's a lot of work. Hunter 1 did 80%. Hunter 2 did 20% Hunter 3 did zero. On opening weekend Hunter 3 brought a gang out and shot all the roosters.

The land was sold shortly after.

I personally know of 2 groups who did just that. 4 guys bought a section west of Pingree and have spent the last couple of summers planting trees to make it huntable. Another group of guys who all retired from the guard partnered up and bought a section as an LLC. Its going to get more common I think.

Could, perhaps, possibly, might help you catch a fish. Try it and let me know it's effectiveness. You know.....for scientific purposes.
