I have a little Coopers hawk sitting on our clothes line post behind the house. He has been sitting there for at least a half hour in the light rain. Kind of fun to watch and sometimes I catch him watching me. I swear he can swivel his head better than 180` each way. Should break his own neck. Hope he catches a mouse or two. LB

We have a pair of American Kestrels aka "sparrow hawks" that have been coming back to nest in one of our trees in the yard for the last 4 or 5 years. They are cool as hell to watch. They snatch all kinds of tweety birds right out of the air. The male went after a full grown cottontail this summer. He was unsuccessful but he gave it a go. Cool little raptors they are.

I get a lot of different birds of prey coming through each year. I've got a sharp-shinned hawk keeping an eye over the chickens as of late. But one of my favorites to watch through the summer are the kingfishers that setup shop in my backyard. They are damn good at catching minnows! Great blue herons are also fun to watch stalking frogs and minnows in the shallows of the pond, but I have to be a bit stealthier to watch them as they'll flee once they see me.

I heard owls out back for the first time since spring just a couple nights ago, I usually get one or two horned owls that setup shop here for a few months in the late fall and again in early spring. They are hell on the bunnies and you won't soon forget the sound of a bunny dying at the beak of an owl.

Great blue herons aka shit slingers...for obvious reasons.

Has anyone ever seen one take flight and NOT sling a stream of shit 2 feet long?

I haven't.

One step closer to the end.
Off and on this year we have had a Cooper's hawk patrol the neighborhood. When it is around the bunny population is severely depleted. When he is absent, it seems like bunnies are everywhere. We also notice quite a few "puffs" of mourning dove feathers out in the lawn. : )

LOL, pretty much all birds regularly take a crap on liftoff, but you are right...blue herons take it to a whole new level with the volume that comes out of their hind end on takeoff.

Question? How does a flock of blackbirds, lets say 2000 strong all turn at the same time. Does one scream left or right? LB
