So, I have a bilateral hernia, which I am not looking forward to. For those who have had the procedure, how long is recovery and how does it effect your daily activities fishing, shoveling, drilling holes, and etc.

Everybody is a little different. I was up fishing and everything within a few days, but being careful not to overdo it.

I had to take 2 weeks off of work but I was feeling pretty good decoying ducks and geese about a week after the surgery.

I was up and moving after a couple days and back on the lake. I had a week off of work because of it. So I figured I should fish.

I took a 4 days plus a weekend off of work(I sit at a desk) so it might have been longer if I was lift things, then went to light duty activities around the house. I was able to take the entire summer as light duty at the camp ground and had mrs johnr lifting all the coolers, kids, firewood, lawn mowing, etc. Seemed a good opportunity to let her see I am relevant around the house...haha

It isn't to bad, but the Vicodin they put me on was fricken awful, made me feel like I was on a non stop merry go round at 10X speed.

Thanks guys for the input, nobody on either side of my parents families have had a hernia repaired so that was no option and doctors like to over generalize about what can and can't be done. I have only been under one other time in my life and that was 25 years ago. Dislocated my elbow during a wrestling match when I was in 8 grade, Didn't go in right away which was bad because my arm was 3 times the size as my other arm, back in the last century we never went to the doctor if we stubbed our big toe. We waited till it was dire straits " give it a few days if the swelling doesn't come down you should go in" was the normal procedure. I don't think that is the norm for some anymore.

I don't like needles, sight of my own blood, and videos of woman giving birth.
After 911 there were pictures of the bodies of the people who jumped from the towers and knowing that these were real live people absolutely scared me. If someone would of said that those were props for a movie I would of said those look real but knowing that they were real gave me the Willies.
The first time I watched the passion of Christ which was very intense to know that was actually how the Romans persecuted the Jews before they nailed them from the cross.

Good Luck I have had it done twice. first time in my early 20's second in the early 30's first one took about 5 days to start moving around good. Second one they got a nerve in the incision or when it healed in the scar tissue. For 4 years now I have constant discomfort.

I had in inguinal hernia not a bilateral. However, I was stiff/store and didn't want to do much for 3 days. I took a week to feel good, probably ten days to be running again. Mostly healed by 3 weeks, no pain or signs of the surgery after 6 weeks.

Wasn't bad. I don't like doctors, needles, or my own blood. But it went well. I was just super tired and felt so sick after the surgery. Slept a lot for those first three days and then was good.

Good luck!

Funny you posted this. I had an umbilical hernia repaired on Thursday. I feel completely butchered and sore as all hell. They say I've likely had it since I was an infant. I probably could have got by without fixing it. But, I started working out and was constantly thinking about it. So. I fixed it. Now, I am seriously second guessing my choice.

Mine was about a 2 inch incision, Mrs johnr had a c section with the boy, hers was 7 or 8 inches I'm guessing. Somehow the recovery was about the same, of course she has tremendous strength and pain tolerance, I'm more little girlish.

Within a week or so you will hardly notice it.

Cost wise I don't remember. But that same year we as a family maxed our out of pocket 5000 deductible. Seemed our family of 6 each had some work done that same year.

Ya. That's the other reason I did it. We have already met our 4500 deductible from our 2.5 year old. Might do my shoulder later this year. ;)
