Kitty litter or sand and some elbow grease. Nothing worse than salt

the freeze thaw cycle is what does the damage - there's no "melting with salt" system that doesn't damage to some degree

that said, some salts are less harsh than others

crushed walnut kitty litter is the least offensive for tracking it into the house - it's inert and doesn't have a soil/dirt component
