Has anyone else noticed the lack of JayKay posts as of late? I have it on good authority that he is currently out of the country and should be back in a week or 2. He will most likely explain himself when he gets back. I'm sure he is having some serious NDA withdrawals. Feel free to post some well wishes for him here for his reading enjoyment. :)

And he’s skipping out on such beautiful weather here.

Although I hear his hot tub is not doing so well in this weather. Be so sad if he didn’t have that to soak in when he returns.

I think it’s great what he is doing because kids need to be adopted my only thing is why do people go to other countries when there are thousands of kids that need to be adopted in the US? Congrats on the new family member jaykay I’m sure your family will cherish the new addition may you all have a great new year.

I have several friends who have also adopted out of country. I think adopting in the US is a bit of a legal shit show to be honest. You never know how long you will wait, or when a mother is going to back out or even come back for her kid 1 year later. That doesn't happen with a foreign adoption. I think there is also an issue of drug use among mothers in US which causes problems with kid for life. Even adopting parents want a healthy baby.

Well good for him, adoption has never really been in the cards for me but I can fully understand the want to help shepherd a growing human through life.

Either way I’m guessing the kid will be in waders pitching cranks in no time.

Ahh, you guys.. yes, I’m in Africa. Finished all paperwork just today, thanks to the good folks at the US Embassy (the officer that helped us today is from Whitefish, of all places).

I’ll be home next week. I’ll give my reasoning for going abroad, when I get home. We DID make an informed decision.

So yeah, I’m a dad to three girls now, God help me...

FWIW, the food here is outstanding! It’s going to be tough to go back to bland food.

Also, THIS Norwegian got a sunburn..

For the record, I questioned the sanity of bringing on another girl versus a boy but it fell on deaf ears. Might be a male dominance thing. Not sure.

The older my two get the more grey hairs I get or I am just getting that much wiser which is what I tell my wife.
Then again our friends across the street have a little boy that is 3 as well and I think he could equally or surpass my amount of sanity come teenage years.
On second thought I think with the cold weather this weekend I am just going to begin my teenage boy provisions now

Sooo... okay, I'm back in the saddle, and getting over some pretty tough jet-lag.

My wife and I have two biological kids. Girls, both. When my wife was pregnant with our second one, she was diagnosed with cancer. She obviously survived, but no more kids. I figured two perfectly healthy kids is wonderful, but she wanted a bigger family. It took her a couple of years, but eventually she won me around to her way of thinking.

So, adoption it was...

We thought about adopting from in the US, but the horror stories (and they can be true, we know..) about mothers changing their minds at the last minute, or lawyers getting involved, or deadbeat dads showing up on the day or delivery.. well, we decided that that's not for us. Our hearts couldn't take it.

So we decided to adopt internationally. The lawyers in other countries aren't as quick to smell blood and money.

So we looked around, and the program in Ethiopia was one of the quicker ones, at that time. We started 4 yrs and 9 months ago.

The paperwork involved is simply incredible. I wouldn't have believed it, if you'd have told me. All I can say is that from the get-go, people told us it wouldn't be easy, it wouldn't be cheap, and it wouldn't be quick. So we were warned.

Anyhow, we were matched last June with a newborn, and we finally got the call a week or so before Christmas. Drop everything and book flights and head out. Left on a sunday early afternoon, and arrived in Addis Ababa Tuesday morning. 9 hour time change. Layovers in Denver and DC. Long trip.

12 days later we're headed back. Addis to Frankfurt to Denver to Bismarck. 37 hours traveling with a toddler is enough to make me question my own sanity.

Anyhow, to answer the questions about adopting overseas versus here... besides the reasons above.. I looked at it like this. Every kid in the US has access to education. And they have access to health care. One way or another, here legally or not, they all can go to a doctor. Whether you like it or not...

But over there, a baby without parents just isn't going to make it. Period.

If they survive, they'll end up on the streets. I saw little kids sitting on the sidewalk, in the same spot, day after day, selling fingernail clippers for pennies. People ignoring them, stepping right over them. Then I looked at my little girls, and I couldn't imagine that life for them.

That's why we brought home Beti... bw beti.jpg

One of the pictures is from 4:30 AM on the first night back, after a hella long trip, and 1 hour of sleep.

I was not highly alert.early am.jpg

I am pretty "up" on adoption right now. If anybody has any questions, please ask. No questions will offend me.
