I have made the trip many times and it is a 3 day trip. Night 1 i have stayed on a big island thats a couple miles upstream from the stanton power plant. Or if ur making good time have camped behind one of the wingdams just below the plant. Day 2 the cross ranch sanger landing is perfect for pulling in with a canoe. Campgrounds right on the water. From there it is one long day to finish out to Mandan or Bismarck. Like others have said winds 20 mph from south south east and i would stay put for the day or have someone pick me up. Been involved in too many white knucklers in situations like that and trust me, there is not fun to be had on days like that. On days that are normal wind wise u can spend 75% of the day drifting sideways down the river dragging a bottom bouncer or jig below the canoe and can have some decent fishing in some spots. You should only need to paddle if you need to be on the other side of the river to stay in the faster current or moving away from submerged logs. It can be a fantastic time but be prepared that odds are 1 of the 3 days you probably will hit a thunderstorm. Mosquitoes can be vicious at times as well.
