Yikes. I’m trying to think of all the major insane things that could have lead up to this happening. Here goes:

Other guy stole the shooters, wife, kids, dog, fish, tackle, boat, bank accounts, SS card, credit score, house, inheritance, and I’m out of ideas. Not worth it either way though.

Maybe the victim was cutting up a limit of 30+” eyes and the shooter had a limit of 13.5” fish?

I reread the story. Apparently it’s not cool to be from out of state and fish Montana. Shooter was probably a rancher still pissed about out of state hunters corner crossing and this was the last straw.
