I live in town and work in an office, but I think an anvil of some sort is a tool that could provide a lifetime of utility around the workbench. Anybody got any leads on a steel anvil? Heck, even an old piece of railroad would be great. It'd be cool to get ahold of a larger piece of rail and cut it up for friends and allies.

Edit: I'm going to sniff around with BNSF, see if I can produce something. As I understand it, they recycle an incredible amount of material. Maybe they have some sort of repurposing program for PR purposes. Just think of the suburbanite hippies that clammor to Home Depot for railroad ties for their organic gardens.

Why a RR tie?? You can buy them by the bundle at several places in Bismarck.

Railroad ties are the wooded boards between the rails, nothing like an anvil. Did you mean a section of railroad rail?

some old engine blocks work really well in place of an anvil. Have a 4 cylinder one from a tractor sitting outside that is very useful.

I have a 2 foot section of rail used for an anvil and use it quite a bit, woks well. I have it mounted upside down and use the bottom flat side.

Regardless of what you choose, just make sure you use it out in the driveway next to your case of Budweiser without a t-shirt on. Also, make sure you use it during supper time or late in the evening so your neighbors know how hard you work. Your horse is going to love all the pretty horseshoes you turn out for her.

Sorry, yes, I meant rail, not tie. I discovered that BNSF has an auction site for their scrap stuff. I registered and now waiting to be approved by the admin. I let you know what I find.

Really? T posts come from rail? Brilliant.

KYwindage, you are a douche canoe. Sometimes I like to announce my presence to new neighbors by cracking a cold one, taking off my shirt, and banging a hammer. At least I have neighbors. *drops mic*

I bought a chunk of rail tie already shaped at Mac's just the other day (20 years ago). You have to watch us old geezers when we say just the other day. :)

troll the country railroad crossings and there's almost always chunks laying around that are clearly dangerous and need removal before someone gets hurt

I prefer a very large vice/anvil combo

A 15" long section of rail, shaped anvil-ish, is also just the thing to hold the garage door open, on a windy day.

Do not EVER get mad, and kick it.

I own an 8" vise that has a flat area behind the jaws that serves as a small anvil.

This is a good point but I'm beginning to like the idea of the portability of a piece of rail. Anvil would be neat but I'm not a blacksmith.

WTF are you gays using these for?

I have never seen a need for such an item, I like to get hammered, but don't know what you guys would be hammering to the point of needing such device.

I suspect a crime is going to take place regarding a rail. Keep your eye on the local papers so we can turn The Wetter into authorities.

What, you don't do blacksmithing as a hobby like everybody else?

After a hard day of hammering on the 'ol anvil, I like to treat myself to an extra lick from the family lolly

On a somewhat related note, I've been watching the TV show Forged in Fire. Pretty cool show with the knives these guys make. The final challenge is always an iconic blade from history and some of them are very complicated. The talent these guys show in forging some of those blades is amazing and the testing of the blades is fun to watch. I think about how they made these blades in ancient times without modern tools. Those guys must have been some badasses.
