Years ago while camping on an island up by the Missouri and Yellowstone confluence for p-fishing, we used Olympic scorecards to rate how hard people hit the sandbar on the south side of the island. One fiberglass boat hit it so hard the driver and other front seat passenger flew through the windshield and landed in 4-6 inches of water, along with the windshield, coolers, etc.

I felt kind of bad for them as I towed them off that sandbar. I know there were some pretty bad bruises amongst the passengers, and the driver's ego.

You have more class than that. Better to mark the spot with jug, etc. than watch people hit something with a boat and possibly get killed

Honestly, there is some truth to Allen's reasoning.

About 10 years ago I hit a barely-under-water jetty, right in town in Bismarck. Caught me completely by surprise and I felt that it ought to have been marked. Contacted Game and Fish, and Corp of Engineers, since this jetty was obviously man-made.

I was told (nicely) that they don't mark them. If it is marked, and the marker is dislodged or removed, they can then be held liable. Not only that, but if they mark one, and not another, they can be held liable. So, clearly, it was in their official best interest not to mark hazards. I understand this.

A private citizen can mark any old dead-head or sandbar that they want, but ultimately it is up to the boat operator to either move slowly if they are uncertain of hazards, or.. simply crash their boat.

Obviously all hazards are not marked. We all know that. But when you knowingly stand on the bank and have scorecards to see who gets injured the worst it’s wrong. Go mark the hazard or wave them off

Many, Many years ago I was fishing up around the Heskett in my 16 ft boat and was fishing a U shaped sandbar, only boat on the river at that time. Out of no where came a 24ft or bigger cabin cruiser and he cuts straight across the river right at me, I thought about waving him off but it looked like he was going to try and wake me, that is how straight of a line at me he was coming so I said the hell with it and let him keep coming. The sandbar I was fishing behind was cutting over about 4-6 inches of water and he drove that tub up on it and actually watched it stop and roll over on its side. Finished putting in my last 2 fish and left with him standing in ankle deep water. I pretty much help anyone I can but left him there because on his current route he would have waked me and that just plain pissed me off. The only time I can think of I was smiling as I left someone in a possibly not good way on the river. Still don't feel any remorse about it, okay maybe a little now. dukgnfsn

Ban Allen! Sure, he was young, and likely intoxicated.

But this is 2018 - he needs to go!

Rush to judgement everyone.... get him!

Years back we were fishing east park lake and when going into the canal there was another boat fishing the North side right before the entrance to the canal so I slowed down and went to the South side at not much more than an idle speed to be polite and hit a frickin rock pile. When I pulled up my motor to inspect the prop damage the guy in the other boat yells " yeah there is a rock pile over there. " The frickin idiot could have waved me off instead of watching me run onto the rocks but apparently some guys get enjoyment out of watching others wreck their equipment.

#NotBashing, occasionally a guy sees something that just doesn’t sound right whether it is the truth or stretching it quite a bit. It had to be pointed out in this case. I imagine Alan Is a fine man when not on the hooch at the river;)

So was the speed restriction lifted in town yet?
Still shows up as active. Mind you you can still go full speed you just can't do it right next to the bank. The rule covers wilton to the gun range so it's more then just in town.

We all have our stories. I was near Grant Marsh a few years ago, waiting to get pulled out, and some jack@ss was tearing around in a biggish cruiser. Probably 22ft Pachanga or something like that. Cutting wakes, weaving in and out of idling boats, etc.

He went south of the train tracks on the west side, then hooked back to the north at full throttle, to get into Diaper Bay. When he stopped, he was in about 4 inches of water, boat laying on it's side. A lot of people cheered.

Nobody wished him dead, but some people are worse learners than others.

Last time I looked which is been a bit of a while now they have a 12000 CFS drop scheduled to take place over the course of about a week starting I think a few days from now. With the lake and river now dropping all ramp and roads that were closed have now reopened. Saw some kids the other night having a Heyday with some carp that were stuck in a pool out a quarter mile now from the nearest water. Make for some interesting duck shoots i bet back in the middle of God knows where with all the little left over ponds.

While it was years ago, I don't recall having anything available to mark what was a very large sandbar. Deadheads, yes...people mark them all the time as a courtesy. I may have even done so a time or two with milk jugs, but how do you mark a sand bar?

Oh, we tried aplenty to wave to people. They just tended to ignore or misunderstand our ambiguous hand waving.

I was just glad to be able to go out and help the half dozen or so boats that needed to be towed off over the weekend. Hell, if I remember right, I hit it myself on our first trip down stream.

Note, the sandbar was near the south shore. We were on the island and the deep water at that time ran right by the island.

Nah, I'm a jerk most of the time. The not being able to help people avoid it was unfortunate, the score cards were actually another person's idea. I was busy fishing most of the time as I tend to suck at catching paddles.

Burleigh County leads the state with 46 cases of West Nile so far. The number one county in the state by far.
