This is a very sad one.

ASHLEY, N.D. (FOX 9) - A Minnesota man drowned while trying to rescue a dog in the Eszlinger Waterfowl Production Area in North Dakota last week, according to the McIntosh County Sheriff's Office.
  • A Champlin man drowned while attempting to rescue a dog struggling to free itself from a thin sheet of ice while trying to retrieve a hunted bird in North Dakota.
  • The man started showing signs of distress, so his friend swam out to assist him, but the man ultimately slipped below the surface.
  • The dog and the friend made it back to shore. The recovery operation for the Champlin man involved multiple agencies and took place over two days.

Tragic. My duck hunting ended when the ice started to form on the edges of sloughs and I didn't hunt sloughs for pheasants until the ice was thick enough to walk on. Cold water puts a scare in my being I can't ignore. Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of the lost hunter.

Oahe claims another

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Hill City man is dead after drowning on the Missouri River in Potter County.

Authorities say it happened just after 4:30 p.m. Friday northwest of Gettysburg on Lake Oahe. Rescuers arriving on scene got the body of Toby Keller out of the water and back to the dock, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities were taken to where the incident happened and found a trash bag with empty beer cans and a bottle of whiskey.

Officials say William Bradford of Hughes County was allegedly driving the boat Keller fell off. Bradford was arrested for Boating While Intoxicated.

I dont hate women at all, im just honest about how their brains work. Generally they are much more selfish than men are, for good reason if you look at it from an evolutionary/reproductive perspective.

There may be research on why women may not risk their lives for a pet or even another person, as they are the caregivers of the family and their brains may be wired to protect themselves more than males. This is pure speculation and I'm not calling women cowards.

Definitely true, women are just less disposable than men are. Same reason men fight wars historically, etc. You can state men are wired to be brave, without necessarily calling women cowardly. they just have a stronger drive for self protection than they do for protecting others.

How about we focus on the thread title and maybe write coherently about some lessons learned from others in the past, that are relatable to this tragic situation, so we can positively contribute to maybe saving lives in the future. Then create new thread if you want to debate the differences in biology.

Like KDM, I have an awful lot of respect for cold water.

I would suspect none of these people thought they were actually putting their life on the line when going after their dog, or out fishing. I drink very rarely nowadays when I'm fishing, especially if I'm the driver as I think it's important that the skipper of the boat remains fully able to assist anyone on the vessel if a problem arises. There's always time for a beer after the fish are cleaned.

I've been lucky a few times in my youth where I've fallen through the ice out trapping muskrats, fishing, etc. I've also jumped overboard while commercial fishing with waders on into what I thought was just a couple feet of water, but as my face passed the gunwale of the barge, I thankfully grabbed the gunwale as my waders filled immediately.

All I can say on this is bad things can happen when out in nature, and quite literally it can happen in the blink of an eye. My recommendation is to not do anything hasty if the dog gets into trouble, etc.

Which part of this should we take literally?

here are some more... boy was I wrong, glad you are here to call me out! ;)

Women Who Died Heroically Trying to Save a Person or AnimalBelow is a compiled list of notable women who lost their lives in acts of bravery while attempting to rescue another person or an animal. This draws from verified news reports and focuses on direct, immediate rescue efforts. I've included modern examples primarily, as historical records often blend such acts with broader wartime or disaster contexts, making specific "trying to save one individual" cases rarer and harder to pinpoint without ambiguity. The list is organized chronologically by the date of the incident.

These stories highlight extraordinary courage, often in split-second decisions. Many involved everyday people—nurses, EMTs, mothers—driven by instinct to protect life, whether human or animal. If you'd like more details on any entry, expansions to historical/wartime figures (e.g., WWII nurses like Aleda Lutz who died transporting wounded soldiers), or a focus on a specific era/region, let me know!

Speaking of COLD….

You’d think the water off the coast of Coronado CA would be warm. Think again!

PS: Don’t try and fight my wife! She’s going to kick your ass!
