Worked out in the Kalispell / Glacier area back in early 80's. Absolutely beautiful out there.

I was going to suggest that also.

Renting a fire lookout tower would be awesome.

Very doubtful you'll find any availability on those this late in the game.

Paradise valley south of Livingston. Tons to do.. alot of VRBO's out there.
Red Lodge is nice and has lots of rentals, but way to busy for me in the summer months, wander just a bit west of there and there are a few rentals and you are in the heart of the beartooths with very few people.

If you are looking for off the beaten path and "non- touristy". The area NW of Helena and NE of Missoula on the south end of the Bob is nice. Also the Big Hole valley south of Butte down to Dillion is a good option.

I ended up finding a cabin on the SD/WY border in the Deadwood area. Some scenery for me, some shopping in Deadwood for the wife and make a trip to Rapid and see all the dinosaur stuff for my 2 yr old son that loves dinosaurs right now. Im stilling looking at MT trips but won't happen till next year. Planning on finding something in the Kalispell area.

Take him down to Hot Springs, Sd to The Mammoth Site if he likes dinosaurs. Can see them excavating bones of those critters all inside of a building.
Take your swim suits along and enjoy the Hot Springs while you are there.
