I intend to keep a few to try smoking, I'm a sucker for a good salmon spread so I'd like to see if there's much of a difference. I fish walleyes on sak no less than 70 days a year, so I'm targeting trout to try something different. I have no doubts we won't be giving our arms a break and looking for some big walleyes though while we are there.

@zoops unlike sak, a vast majority of peck is deep enough to support trout, especially this time of year where they are much shallower, so you are not limited to just the dam area to find them.

I don't care to eat them each their own. Same with Salmon in Sakakawea yuk. Fort Peck is still a secret somewhat for walleyes. Boat landings make it tough and roads to get to them even worse is why especially to west if it rains you are stuck till roads dry out. Just check stat's for last tournament they had 10 fish close to 100 lbs to win and go down list close to 50 to 75 fish over 26" plus. Wish I still lived in Montana again. Age and health make it hard to do the things we want to anymore. Good fishing

I've been picking away at the salmon we caught off of Sak last Sept. I think it is really good eating myself and have had no issues keeping it moist. Have given some away and made some to share with others and everyone thought it was great eating. Cooking has been oven or pellet smoker, the two chunks I did on Sunday were not icky

I've posted several times of walleye beaching themselves after the ShadRap below the Darling dam. It's most likely going to happen in Oct just before it's too dark to see. I think a reaction response of some sort is triggered when the prey is easily trapped against a barrier(?). Anyways; year round, any species, any location.

One time in Alabama, I must have caught every bass in a farm lake by dipping the tip in the water and twitching "Old Reliable" (any species in the world) to my feet at the edge of a dock.

(Again) Universal lure/color; fresh/salt:

I could be like Bubba talking to Forrest listing the species I've caught with this bait; to include topwater walleye and channel cat.

Well, it didn't go as we hoped, but we managed to each get one and experience several other chasing fish. We arrived to a huge lake cool down that had sent both the trout and the walleyes into a slump. Locals were saying fish were in the 90-110' range and scattered out all over. We fished 8 hours on the first day and only got one 18" fish. We ended the day in some good walleye holes and couldn't get them to eat either. The fish we did catch came out of 40' with the bait.
Friday morning, we woke up to a lake wind advisory and hit the water anyways, spent some time working over some areas near the shaft houses where would manage the wind a bit better and came up with a zero. We ran back towards the marina and started fishing points there working west to the east side of Big Duck Creek for walleyes, picked up a few small ones. Got tired of the line bow and the wind blowing through our ears and got off the water about 1pm. At that time, waves were just shy of 5' out on the main lake, but they had all of big duck creek to build.
Saturday morning, we woke up to flat calm conditions that were expected all day and hit the water. We ran to Haxby point where the wind had been piling up hard the day before and found the bait pushed up from 15-30' I smacked a 26.5" in the first 5 minutes, followed by a number of chasers and two hits that didn't hook up. About 30 or so minutes later my buddy hooked into a 22" and at several times we had 2-3 fish on the livescope that we would be working. I watched a large fish swim in and flipped my bait out to it, stopped it above its head and started reeling it up, it chased and hit, when it came into sight, I found that instead of a trout, I had a 28.5" walleye on that just crushed the large paddle tail I was using. I also managed about a 30" pike the same way. The fish completely disappeared from sonar once the sun got high at about 11:30am.

We found anywhere from 53-57 degree water that the locals said was in the 60's like a week or so ago and at that the time, the bite was on for most species. Very cool place, and ill definitely go back again some day.

Thanks for all the replies.

are lake trout good to eat? Ive never had a trout I would pick over a walleye or pike on the table.
Lake trout are actually char family not trout. Can't beat walleye for taste though. Best i have is boil them with Lawry season salt and dip in butter. Years ago had some delicious Lakers from Priest Lake Idaho. Main forage was freshwater shrimp makes for shrimp tasting Lakers.

Lake trout are one of my favorite fish to catch and eat. Was on Whitefish Bay of Lake of the Woods 3 weeks ago. Fishing for us was slow. Caught 3 in 2 days, but they were all 28.5-29.5" fish. The other boat did much better at 12 caught, 2 broke off, and lost 5. Best advice with lake trout is DO NOT FREEZE THEM! It is best to eat them within a few days. Grilled with skin off on tinfoil, butter, sliced onions, and lemon garlic seasoning.

Neighbor was telling me he has had them before and they were just fine. They were fresh caught and made into fish nuggets that took a dip in the oil
