I grew up in Detroit Lakes, MN but have been in ND since 1986. I have noticed and my Dad commented many years ago that when cleaning Sak walleyes they are much "greasier" (harder to hang on to) that the MN walleyes that we were used to. I attribute that to there diet of smelt, etc. Anyone else have similar experience? I think they taste just as good but maybe a little richer in oils.

Quite a few years ago, we caught some bluegill/sunfish through the ice on Raleigh Reservoir. Also caught rainbow trout at Fish Creek Dam through the ice. In both cases, the fish tasted muddy and I attribute it to all of the agricultural run-off. The only thing to do with the trout is to SMOKEM!

Spring run walleyes from the Red River taste like mud as well. I do not see a change in color of the flesh, But the taste is gross.


The Red River is one of the cleanest body of waters around. Just because its stained in color doesn't mean its muddy.

Tell that to the algae blooms on Lake Winnipeg caused by devastatingly high levels of phosphorous coming from the ‘cleanest body of water around’

For the first 25 years of my life, the Red River flowed through my backyard and was a large part of my childhood. Every spring when if flooded it would deposit 2-3 inches of the finest, greasiest silt you've ever known on our lawn. I had the privilege of reseeding that lawn no fewer than a dozen times over the years. Trust me....it is not stained, Red River is muddy as hell.

Almost more than water quality, I think that the water temperature is a large factor in fish taste. I generally don't eat lake fish caught beyond early July as they get mushy and taste like algae. The cold clean mountain water that feeds the upper Missouri River is a walleye fisherman's best friend.

I have spoiled my wife. She is used to FRESH never frozen walleye out of OAHE. And now, she can tell the late July fish out of warmer water aren't as good, they are a little, and I mean a little mushy, still good.

the red is chemically pretty clean. but, it is muddy/silty. if memory serves we are talking about the difference between total dissolved solids and total suspended solids. the former is relatively low. the latter is very high.

I think as long as you filet a fish that has been taken care of, it’s hard to have a bad filet. Let them float around dead in your livewell in July and you get mushy fish.

When I am fishing in hot weather any fish that I plan on keeping goes directly into an iced cooler. Never had a bad filet that way.

If you think the fish might be suspect, deep fry it. You can deep fry a turd and make it taste good.....so I am told.

Deep fried cauliflower still tastes terrible. I'll venture to say the same goes for broccoli.

Kind of like the guys who shoot an antelope in the morning leave the hide on all day when it is 70 out piled up in the back of the pickup saying it tastes bad.

One step closer to the end.
In the past, a friends dad said he wouldn’t eat walleye out of certain lakes because they taste muddy. I never put much thought into it until I cooked up some eyes last week from a lake I’d never fished before. Anyone else have similar thoughts?

Also, Barbara Walters is a babe. That it all.
