meh. Apply in a unit you have a decent shot at drawing if you really need a buck tag. I apply 4c for mule deer every year, i know its gonna take me at least 6 years to draw. had ~60% chance of drawing this year. Didnt happen, but next year my odds go up even more. Pretty simple.

I agree with Wags, there are ways to improve your chances of drawing a tag. I don't know if the ND system is perfect but it's better than some states. Where there are no preference points you can wait a long time for a tag. In a state where you can purchase points it can turn into a rich man's tag. Our system may not be perfect but it's better than some.

I do agree with some who would like to see the results earlier but since I don't know what is involved in setting up the draw and therefore I don't have a solution I'm not going to complain. Complaining without a solution is just whining.

the key, I think, is to stumble into some land, get a gratis for said land, stumble onto and shoot a "buck of a lifetime", and then basically chill after that because there's nowhere to go but down

pretty simple really

sorry - but most of the good stumbling lands are gone now

there is still some around but you really have to stumble into it

and it usually involves death or divorce so the process is a tad icky

I still believe instead of harping on the GF for not getting a tag, people should be harping on the land owners for removing habitat. I'm not farmer, and I'm sure they have their reasons. Not blaming them one bit. I'm fine with the system the way it is. Seems to me nobody really had an issue with the system when the GF was giving away 140k tags and people were getting buck tags and multiple doe tags. Now it's only a problem when the deer numbers are down and more people are applying for a tag.

I believe that it would be more constructive to have a discussion on how to properly manage the deer population, grow the numbers of deer in the state, speak with farmers, state agencies and such and come up with solutions to provide better habitat. We may never see the years of 140k tags being given away, but if we got the deer population back to a point where 80k tags are given away every year, I think most people would be happy. In short, the system isn't broken, its the numbers of deer in the state.

What I chuckle at is how heavily people whined and complained about too many deer eating their property and bouncing off their shiny new vehicles in the past. Now those same people are complaining there's not enough of them.(insert finger pointing blame here)

The problem with this is they have no clue on how many deer are in the state. It's been a decent amount of years since they have done a survey.

The loss of habitat really sucks to see. I've stopped focusing on getting a buck tag for the last couple years. I want meat in my freezer over a nice rack at this time in my life. No venison in my freezer gives me nightmares.

No deer tag? No worries. I just wear orange when heading to the local butcher shop when picking up my side of beef. Makes me feel neat and feel that I hunted for my prey. Carry on.

What's one more deer? If you see the big one, bag it. G&F is corrupt, just slip 'em a $50 if you get checked and don't have a tag.

I loved this tidbit:

"In fact, in 2015, not a single farmer from ten major agricultural states was on the list to be checked for compliance. So, the areas in greatest need of monitoring for wetland drainage and soil erosion managed to receive the least attention."

Glad to see our tax dollars/conservation dollars at work! Keep it up NRCS!

I like preference point system. The only thing that could maybe see a change is the multipliers they use to apply to each preference point. The current system worked well in the past. Now that it is harder to draw a tag and more and more people have higher number of preference points, I think the multiplier could be changed.
Current System

Points - Entries
0 - 1
1 - 3
2 - 5
3 - 7
4 - 65
5 - 126
6 - 217
7 - 344
8 - 513

The big jump is from point 3 to 4. A guy gets his name in the hat 9 more times.

In the past it generally took 4-5 points to draw a mule deer tag. That worked out well because those highest point holders had a huge advantage over the other guys with 0-3 points.

Now there are so many more people with 4 and 5 points that the max point holders (6-8) don't have that same huge advantage over the guys with 4-5 points.

The multiplier needs to change to give more favor to the higher point holders. Simple.
