Yeah, 8-12 inches expected in Fargo and 5-8 inches in the Twin Cities starting Friday evening and into Monday. We're supposed to be on our way home Monday from the latter location. I'm not sure I can handle being in those conditions for hours on end with a six-month old, a 3-year-old and a wife who has awful winter travel anxiety. Hmm...

Not to rub it in, but I'll be down in Florida :) I feel bad for you traveling with young ones during weather like that. It sucks. Been there, done that. Although I hate being gone during storms like that because when you get back then it's all work, shoveling out the vehicle at the airport, snowblowing to get into the driveway, etc.

Talking storm totals this far out is pointless. They barely have an idea of the area it will pass through let alone it's speed or how much moisture it will have to work with let alone things like dry slots and finer points when it comes to where the heavy snow falls. This damn thing could easily hit winnipeg or Omaha instead of what that shows. I wouldn't mind a Christmas storm but let's wait a couple days before we start counting snowfall.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Taking off Thursday evening to head to the very SE section of SD. I'll have a 1yr old, 2.5 yr, 4yr and 5yr plus wife and dog. Trying to figure out how I'll get in my driveway since I live out in the country. Might have to drop the family off at a neighbors so I can clean out.

On the positive side, I should be able to actually put my 6ft snow blower to good use.

Duckslayer....We used to live 11 hours from Bismarck when the kids were younger and would make the drive 5-6 times/year. When the roads are bad, don't hesitate to use it as an opportunity to spend a nice xmas at home with just you, the wife and kiddos. Trust me when I say your other family members will get over it. We did this on a handful of occasions over the years and it was great, low key and relaxing at home while you read instructions and put the kid's new toys together!

The forecasters normally won't talk about storms this far out openly other then a brief mention. To get any real info you generally have to go into their forecast discussion to find any facts about the storm. This is what the weather service in Bismarck has to say on it and the eastern ND office has even less.

The GFS/ECMWF indicate an upper level trough moving onto the west
coast Friday and digging/deepening as it moves east across the
Rockies on Saturday (Christmas Eve Day)...emerging into the central
plains as a stacked surface/upper level system Christmas Eve
night...and moving northeast towards Minnesota/Great Lakes on Sunday
(Christmas Day). This scenario would bring another chance of snow to
ND from Christmas Eve Day through Christmas night. The models
diverge on Christmas night (Sunday night) with the GFS more
progressive, taking the system over the Great Lakes and out of our
area. The ECMWF is slower in movement of the system and would
suggest snow continuing into Monday morning

I'm hoping they're way off and we'll barely get a dusting, but I like your idea. A lot. If things don't change (or get worse) come Thursday, we may just stay home for the holidays. Which I would be 100 percent on board with.

Most of us know that. It's kinda like speculation on that big buck we want to shoot!

Last two storms were underestimated, so this time they are likely overestimating. The nws still has this passing through South Dakota Sunday.

Give me $40 on 4 inches for Bismarck.

Well if it's anything like most years just wait till two days before the storm and look who is supposed to get the most vs being missed then reverse the two and that will be the likely outcome.

Remember they predicted a storm with 8-12 a week before and we got nothing. Then 3in and we got 23. My money would be on 3 or less or 12 or more.
