In the 60s-80s we had ruffed grouse in the Turtle Mountains and now they are far and few between but the Sharptails moved in and we didn't have them back then.
The Pembina Hills used to be good for Ruffed Grouse also however the NDG&F seemed to think the area needed Flippn Turkeys. I tried to get an answer why they planted turkeys as were Turkeys native to this area? All I heard was "not sure". Can you find out with all the resource available to you? All I got was silence.

Had a good time watching my old dog work a grape vine thicket chasing the scent. Did not yell at the dog as the bird walked out the other side into heavy brush. Damn them birds know how to survive.

It was awesome to hear them every spring when I was growing up but It's been so long that I don't remember the last time I've heard one.

Agreed, spring traveling via canoe in mn bwca on quiet no wind mornings "drum beats" as we traveled along shorelines, ruffies and spruce hens
abundant,great memories and time.

Ruffies are excellent table fare, spruce hens? Not so much, gammie.

you will never make a difference killing predator birds to save upland birds. better off trapping skunks coons and cats
I have traps set year round for Coons and Skunks. Just this past summer and fall I caught 32 Coons and 21 Skunks and 2 cats. I just use Dog proof traps to keep the dog out of them.

And we have Bald Eagles in are trees weekly.

One of the most memorable hunting experiences I have is hunting deer in the badlands near dusk. Owls guiding over the landscape silently, looking for prey. Silent but deadly.

Ive got a place near chamberlain sd,neighbors (3) raise pheasants for their farm/hunting operation, ive purchased a few 100 to release to bolster our local pheasant population his tried and proved method to release pen raised birds is when the chicks are at least 12wks old to have a chance to make it out of 100 chicks released he claims if lucky 30% will survive, preds and weather.

Another neighbor rolls the dice uses a shotgun whilst out doing chores to reduce local hawk population crazy ....these guyz advertise wild pheasant hunts w/lodging $500/per gun per day! Booked for the 24 season, for 3 birds! Wild my ass, my 2yr pup catches them every time were out messing around.
