Smelt. I have tried hotdogs for only one day and didn't catch a thing on them. Went back to smelt. Have also used herring with success.

Use the red hotdogs. Walleye Guy swears by them!! :;:exactly:;:smokin Take some buns with you can always heat them up for dinner!

Yes I always have a tip up or two with red beef hot dogs on them. They might not catch as many fish but it always seems to catch the bigger ones. The one in my profile picture came on a red hot dog. That fish is 41" and was caught shortly after a 39.5".

The small minnow on the treble below the smelt is a great idea. I will implement that this year.

Lunker, throw the smelt/herring on your dash on the way to your fishing spot. Just make sure there isn't a hole in the bag.

The biggest minnow a guy can find with a flashy spinner blade attached above the leader. When the minnow is wiggling around the blade flashes and seams to be irresistible to pike. Halographic Clown color has been my favorite.

Smelt from the tailrace that has been prepared and frozen fresh in a vacuum bag works 5 times better than any store bought smelt. They smell fresh and clean like candy watermelon after you thaw them out and they don't fall apart or get mushy. also produce waaaay more fish.
