Grandfather-grandson project with two g kids last year was the Pinewood Derby car build. G kids were required to do most of the build. About the only thing that I did was melt the lead to add weight and polish the nails / axles on my lathe. Polished both the surface of the nail as well as the inside of the nail head. Neither would have been voted best looking race car, but one of them took second place in one of the derby's in Bismarck last year. Great way to spend time with g kids.

Alignment (rub the rail), polish/lube the axles, smooth out the wheels and put the weight over the rear axle.

Let your kid do most of the build/paint job and race. I always found it bullshit to see a souped up batmobile type car and the dad cheering it on with the kid not really giving a flying f about the whole thing. Don't be that dad... And yes, your weight distribution and smooth wheels are the key

I "helped" my daughter with a few cars, she didn't care about how fast it would go, so I let her design it all. I've still got the cars, one is shaped like a VW bug and one looks like Perry the Platypus. She didn't win the race, but won best looking cars. Only thing I did was help with the band saw as she was a bit too young to do that. I agree with your statement, not about winning but having fun.

This is 2019 first place car for troop 371 there would not be back to back champ in 2020 but 3rd place hardware did come to the fracman house
