I'm looking for a large amount of plastic shrink wrap to make a few archery targets for my backyard. I figured I'd check here before contacting the local warehouses and boat dealers. Any type of plastic pallet wrap or shrink wrap for winterizing boats will work. If you have access to this stuff, and are willing to save some for me, please let me know.

The plastic will be used to stuff a few target bags, and I'll gladly post up the results once complete.

I'm located in the Bismarck/Mandan area.

Since most dealers are puling all the toons and boats out of hibernation and cutting it off daily I would check at mast any dealership.

That's what I'm planning on doing. Just wanted to check here first and see if anyone had access to it. I've contacted a few other places that have large amounts of pallet wrapping and plastic, but some weren't willing to save it and wouldn't let me get it out of the garbage.

I spoke to someone in the service department at Moritz, and he recommended that I visit the large dumpsters at the marinas. He said they will be full of the stuff unless they've been dumped recently. Looks like I'll be doing some dumpster diving in the near future.

I remember when I had access to the foot wide rolls. We would shrink wrap friends cars.

I could be wrong, but is an archery target filled with heat sensitive plastic a good idea? The archery target I have sucks donkey balls.

The reason for it being so hateful is how badly my arrows stick in the damn thing. It's a layered "block" style with the layers being a soft plastic foam. The arrows heat up going in and literally melt the plastic to the arrows. I still have a tough time believing how the damn thing glues itself to the arrows.

OP have you thought about stuffing the bags with carpet padding?

If I could find some carpet padding, I think I would like to try that. I've also heard old rags/clothes work well.

I have a block target right now that is getting worn out after 3-4 years. I think the block target would last me 8-10 years if I didn't shoot broadheads into it and kept it inside.

I have a big 3x3 target that is stuffed with old rags, and it works well. The targets that I'm making now will be for outdoor use and will be left outside for extended periods of time. Outdoor targets that are filled with rags, clothes, etc. will mold after a few weeks if left out in the rain.

I know there are a lot of people on other forums that have used this material successfully. It's free, so I guess it's worth a shot. I'm expecting to get some residue on the arrows, but it will usually wipe right off.

Well, back on the hunt for plastic again. I hit up a few of the roll-off dumpsters at the local marinas this weekend. There were quite a few of covers in there, but I was only able to get my hands on one. The rest of them were covered in fish guts, branches, grass, etc. Even saw a soiled pair of undies in the one by Rock Point....I'm assuming they had Mexican food that day....

I also called up to Walmart and Lowes. They both save the pallet wrap, as they get reimbursed for recycling it.

Any other thoughts?

i don't know man. this seems like a lot of work. i would just buy a yellow jacket. aren't they like $40? i guess if you go through a few a year, it probably pencils out. but, it would take more than $40-80 for me to drive all over town looking in garbage cans for used plastic only to take said plastic and then go make something with it. what you gonna stuff it into? show us a pic when done please

I'm stuffing morrells replacement bags. If it were just one target I would definitely go buy one off the shelf, but I'm planning to make a few for my backyard range. Replacement bags are only $20 each, so I'll gladly spend a little extra time to find stuffing material.

Made a few more phone calls with no luck. Looks like I'll be buying targets after all. I wish the block range targets weren't so expensive.

Keep an eye out on that evil website Camofire, they have been running blem Block targets as of late for half the price of a new one. I bought a XL Block for $80 something and what they call a blem I call a steal of a deal.
