After 15 years of use, it's time to retire the old Yukon Fish Trap and look at something new.

What are everyone's thoughts on the pop-up vs flip over ice houses. I see wind as more of an issue with the pop-up. I like the idea of having a sled to pile crap on with the flip over. I like the room of the pop-up.

What are other pros and cons of each.

Flip over when I'm by myself it's faster to setup and more mobil. I use the pop up when ever I have the kids with. Has way more room that way they can move around. They are not that bad in the wind once u figure out where to put your anchors.

flip over if you have a snowmobile and run and gun, pop up if you like lots of space and move less...I am a man of leisure so once it starts getting really cold i move less. Therefore I fish in a permanent or popup.

Pop-ups are anything but portable. Once you get the damn things set up, the last thing you want to do is move. If you're not taking kids out, get a sled. Eskimo came out with a hybrid version last year, might be worth a peek.

I'm really getting lazy. I have the pop up along, but usually just sit in the vehicle or on a lawn chair when it's late ice and 20+ degrees outside. The pop up usually serves as an outhouse with a rattle reel so you have something to do when your in there.

pop up pros:

1. a lot of room. Which is very nice sometimes when landing big fish or with kids
2. Fold up to a relatively small bag
3. You can fish a lot of holes and put them however you want them.

pop up cons:
1. Wind can be an issue
2. Mobility
3. Not nearly as warm as a flip over on a real cold and windy day

Flip over pros:
1. Drill and fish in like a minute
2. You can move with ease
3. Sled to pull your stuff

Flip over cons:
1. room/space

Basically the pros of one is the cons of the other and vise versa.

Obviously you need both

With drill attachment I can set up and take down pop up in 10 minutes. If I have help less but you have to carry a drill. With the big buddy and insulated Eskimo I can sit in my undies in sub zero weather if I want to. Seats in flip over a nicer. Graphs are better than flashers

Yep..pop ups are a pain if windy...yeah..i know....it isn't windy very much. haha. If you don't have a vehicle to block the frequent hurricane strength wind, you will find yourself swearing a lot. I have a flip over and things can get blustery even in that if not behind a vehicle.
One other tip...if in a flip over..leave your 10 inch auger behind...take your 6 or 8..especially if kids along..or if unsteady and clumsy fisherpersons are along.;:;popcorn

Up to 35 mph winds have been no problem. Just use bunny cord on anchor to shack

Having both is my other option....the reality is between ground blinds camping tents, and ice houses I'm about out of room The frame work is in need of some minor repairs but the tent fabric is about junk. If I put say 300 into the old one and then get a new pop up I may get the boot.

If someone invented an insulated ground blind that could be used for ice fishing and hunting that would save a guy some room.

I have both, and have only used the pop up once. The flip over Otter is my go to. When fishing by myself, it is faster to set up and holds everything I need in the sled. When I did used the pop up, I hauled it out with my otter Sled.......

yep - popups = sweat - and I HATE getting lathered up on the ice. I don't mind drilling 50 holes - but setting up a popup just seems like drudgery when a guy should be fishing

with flipovers you can temporarily wet a line and stay sheltered with almost no effort - fully banking in and setting up heater IF and only if you think it's worth it. Popups are committing to fishing one place for a while and I, like many of you, have commitment issues. :;:smokin

Insulated pop up would be my choice I go fishing by myself lots and can have my Eskimo 949i set up in less than 5 mins if windy just drill in anchor before popping anything up. Only downside I see to a pop up is you have to buy a sled to pull all your gear out if u can't drive on.
