The part that makes them junk is the cheap construction. The two buttons for removing the blades are mad of thin plastic and break very easily making removal impossible.

Bought this version about 10 years ago. As noted the blade releases are a weak point and mine broke within a couple years. I disassembled and asked Rapala to send me a new plastic piece but they only get the whole knives from China so sent me a whole new knife and batteries. Still using that replacement knife today with the battery from the original purchase. I charge after every use.

Bought the new R12 on clearance at Scheels but can't make myself open it while the old one is still going. It owes me nothing at this point, and definitely can't complain about the customer service from Rapala.

Anyone have one? Mine is only 6 months old, but the batteries seem to be crapping out on me already. It came with 2 batteries, and one seems okay, but the other only makes it through 4-5 fish before dudding out.

I have been cycling the batteries through the charger now for the past few days. If they sit off the charger for 1/2 a day they seem to start losing charge. We'll see how they respond after my cycling them through on the charger.
Start catching less fish and that damn Rapala will run forever!!...rockon... haha..but yeah..I had the same experience...Rapala batteries suck!

The gears stripped out of my Rapala R12 HD. Was out of warranty so Rapala wouldn’t replace. My theory was I didn’t swap out new blades early enough which strained the gears. I bought another one, same model so plenty of batteries. Will see how it goes.

in 30 years I've used 3 american anglers, and I'm due for my 4th now because at the butt end of my current one the wire is splitting open. I've owned 2 rapala electric knives and neither one lasted a single season, but I've heard the new Lithium ones are good

They are sharp as hell. The only thing I have noticed bad about them is they have a stronger tendency to "get stuck on the skin" when fileting the meat off the skin. Probably makes it really easy for some to accidentally cut through the skin.
