I believe at one time a guy in Martin did it. But no idea if he still is around.

I’ve tried it myself a couple times with my less expensive reels. I always end up finding a tiny spring that I have no clue where it came from after the job is complete. A spinning reel seems so much more complex to me then a baitcaster yet by and large to get a decent baitcaster you have to spend three times the money for quality.🤷🏻‍♂️

I fix my reels by throwing them away and getting a new one from Walmart.
This. I buy $50 reels from Scheels and if I get 2-3yrs out of them, I'm winning. Same with rods. Im not responsible enough to own $300 St. Croix (however its spelled) rods. I'll take to $50 Scheels Outfitter rods all day long. I can still slam walleyes like a boss with these setups.

YouTube has some repairs but its not real difficult if you take your time, open it up and pay close attention before removing "anything". Quick pic of dismantling so know orientation of how it goes back together. Lot of times failures internally are just fouled, dirty grease. Spray out really good with brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner and reapply grease. Schematics you get with reels are almost impossible to make heads or tails of.
If repairs don't work, toss and get a new one. Probably cheaper than what you would pay someone.

I like my old zebcos, dunk them in the water once in a while and they work like new. Theres nothing like the sound of a fish peeling line off a zebco.

I love Scheels Outfitter Rods or did...Mine are still St Croix?...

OT: Is it still possible to get a new reel NOT made in China?

Every time I ever caught a fish big enough to peel drag off a zebco the drag would lock up and snap my line. You must have had better zebcos then me. Lol. Then again that was 40 years ago

lol, nope just better line , every year you have to strip a few feet off and dunk it in the water before you start trolling.

I still have ONE Zeb USA Quantum in service by cannibalizing two other reels. I wish I'd bought 100 in '94. BTW; Zeb CFR drags lock up like a nun if breached with penetrating oil. My "lifetime" membership to Steve Penaz's NAFC "suddenly" went dark after I provided this review about the then "Reel and Line Magic"; last I saw, it was just "Reel Magic".

It was real magic how the magazines stopped like the Boy's Dale Jr. drag. It was actually a blessing as he mastered both spinning and BC when he was in 3rd grade. Still have the rod: Wish I hadn't trashed the reel.

That is all.

I'm pretty sure I have over 50 reels in my stash. I went hog wild with Led core and trolling outfits and multiple bait casters that have probably caught more bird poop and cat asses than fish. I still like a spin cast for pitching/casting.
