I recently bought a couple shotguns, so I want to restore and retire the old Model 12 that was handed down from my Grandpa. Its not in terrible shape, but has been the only shotgun I have hunted with the last 10 years so it has been used. I am not a huge gun guy, so I don't know a lot about the processes.
Are there any local places around Minot that can refinish the stock and barrel? Any ideas on how much something like that costs?

Rub it down with rust inhibitor and leave it as-is. IMO, refinishing is akin to removal of the shotgun's soul and it won't add any monetary value.

I have zero interest in selling. I hope my boy can shoot some birds with it someday. There are just a few spots on the stock that have worn down. Is there any worry that the wood will rot if wet? Anything I can do at home to get a protective layer over those spots?

Like SDMF says, clean it good and leave as is, keep it dry and wipe it down once a year, and don't sell it you will be sorry someday for doing that, hope your son gets to hunt with it

If you have some worn spots on the stock I would consider a good rub down with linseed oil as well as the rust inhibitor on the metal.
