The answer to this one will surprise you, I think, if you haven't heard it already.

Imagine you were to wrap the Earth with a string at the equator, roughly 25,000 miles of string. If you wanted to raise the string one foot off the surface for the entire distance, how much additional string would you need?

I'm going to guess less than 10 feet of string. I know circumference is C=2 x pi x radius, and the radius is only changing by 1 foot, so the effect will be minimal. However, I'm too lazy to do the actual math.

My first instinct was "It's gonna take a lot more string" but it's the same amount if you go a foot beyond the circumference of the Earth or a foot beyond the circumference of a basketball.
