The funny part is lots of people thing I'm joking when I say walmart lightning rod. The only rod I own that cost more than 50 bucks weighs 5 lbs and has stainless steel rollers instead of eyelets.

A 7' medium Berkeley lightning rod with an average walmart pfleuger spinning reel spooled with 8-12 lb nanofil, a 3ft 8-10lb fluorocarbon leader and an 1/8 oz jig is a combo I'd take anywhere with confidence.

My hopes and dreams of ever being a paid, or professional angler are probably shattered everytime a potential sponsor reads my posts...

Coupla things: I have the entire gamut, from Lightings to Loomis, with Pfluegers, Scheels, and Fenwicks thrown in. Come borrow ANY of them, anytime you want.

Last winter, when I went looking for a "good rod" I found myself looking at Loomis, etc. Talked with Dakota Tackle, about 13, and they talked me into a less expensive Fenwick. Said that the 13's are great rods (and I realize that they make lots of models), but that they saw them being returned relatively often. They said that they're good, but apparently a bit fragile.

So, I bought a less expensive rod from them (that's Dakota Tackle for you - talked me into spending LESS money - no complaints here) and ended up getting a Loomis later anyhow.

im running a st. croix triumph 2 piece 7' medium light, ive always liked the lighters action.. i like the 7' for jigging and pitching jigs 2 piece so that when im out muddin on the east side of the state i can throw that rod in the back of my pick up, also the rod was only like 120 or so when i bought it so its not super high end and im not as worried about it in the box of the pick up!

My wife bought me a Berkeley Cherrywood as a jigging rod out of the boat. That is another rod ive been very surprised by how much i like it for the price, and match with a pfeuger or abu garcia reel with boat some fish in the freeze

They're pretty good at telling you what you need even though it might now line up with what you want. I know 13's ice rods are fragile so I refuse to buy them. I'm really stuck between custom, loomis, and st. croix right now.

Before I started painting, I thought about making rods. Maybe this is my sign.

I dont see any other option than you starting to build custom ones yourself. I'll order 2 right away.

Well, I don't know how much more free time I have to fill. But I'd be tempted to make a small run at it.

U can get the best of both worlds if u go with a custom using a st croix blank.

The only downside to custom rods is the lack of warranty. Gloomis and st croix have outstanding warranties and that is why when buying top end rods i go with them.

That's all fine and good until you fish with something high end. It's kind of like really enjoying and being satisfied with round steak. You are perfectly happy until somebody buys you a filet mignon. Now that is all you can think about and the idea of going back to round steak makes you cringe. Sure, you can survive on round steak but you now know how good it can be. So whatever you do, don't borrow a high end stick from a buddy to "try".

Id buy a DM custom rod in an instant. I can see the quality and attention to detail in your baits. ;:;bowdown

Just got done looking over on mudhole.com. I need a small loan to start building rods. I'll take a class first (if they would ever offer one in bismarck), and figure out what I need for equipment.
