same goes for crankbaits that generate a lot of resistance (deep divers)... it gets tiresome for my elbows/wrists/shoulders on long rods under all day pitch-fest conditions (which I truly enjoy - but it gets harder as I get older)

- - - Updated - - -

one last thought - I loathe the longer 6-10 and 7 rods on really windy days (except for slip-bobbering where longer is always better)

"wind bites" are amplified by the longer rods - your ability to cypher between wind gusts and subtle pickups goes to crap

f word. Well, I have two 6'6" rods. And two seven footers for throwing cranks and dragging spinners.

that's just MY experience - you know what guns/rods/beer/women tastes are like - everybody's different!

I do tend to over analyze things as you may have guessed

the whole time I'm fishing - if I'm not totally dialed in and "feeling it" then my mind races on why that is - what I can do to improve it - it's a CURSE

in my mind once a jig has been pitched a really long-arse distance my chances of feeling and hooking up start to plummet anyway

Probably go into a few places, pick them all up and see what you like. At that price point there are some good choices out there. Personally I have mostly all St. Croix stuff, but there are a lot of really good sticks out there. If you up your price to $250 you get into some even better stuff obviously. The St. Croix legend tournament series is in that range. I have two of the seven footers ML actions and they are phenomenal for pitching Jigs. When you need longer casts I like that extra length of 7 ft to whip them far. I'll even loan you one out for a few days to see If you likey.

Most expensive loomis you can afford and don't look back. Every $100 more for each step up to the higher model is worth 100x that. By ugly sticks until you can afford an NRX. You won't regret it.

I have St Croix and G. Loomis and they are premium rods, but give the Scheels Outfitter One Titanium a shot. Super sensitive and good backbone for a good hook set. I have two of the Scheels and hardly ever use the others now. Stay with the 6'6"

I have a bunch of Scheels ONEs. Too many of the longer ones though.

If anyone wants to trade their 6'6" ONE for a 6'10" (or 7'?) let me know.

For vert. jigging I like ~6' light action. For pitching jigs/plastics I like ~7' light action. I like both of them to have a little "give" in the tip to allow the fish to load up the rod a bit without feeling it.

OOOORRRRRR, take me with you and borrow it for the day :D

Name the day and we'll take fancy feast out.

Well now I regret asking the damn question. I'm thoroughly confused at this point. Maybe I'll just buy two rods (6' and 6'10") and call it a day.

Yep. Just be sure you have line that comes off the spool nearly resistance free. Without it, an 1/8 oz. jig won't go very far.

I am a fenwick fan. I bought a 7'2" elite tech, medium power with fast tip. They are $150. Super light and sensitive. I bought it mostly for jigging but also use it sometimes for live bait rigging and it does a great job. Every rod I use for pitching jigs is 6'10" or longer. Besides getting increased casting distance the longer rods pick up a lot of slack line quickly when jigging and on hook sets. The extra length also comes in handy when using for a live bait rod to keep the line away from the boat.

Sounds good! SS Fancy Feast, here I come. For what its worth, JW is the best jig pitcher I know. By a LOOOOONNNNGGGGGG way, he uses a 6' IMX.

Scheels rods have always done me right.

I fish a lot, but am not a tourney guy, nor do I need to hold a $500 plus rod to out fish anyone...haha

I used to purchase real expensive sunglasses too, but after losing the 4th pair seems the polarized $40 pair works just as neat.

My buddy used to give me shit about sitting in an expensive boat with nice electronics and using kmart brand rods and tackle...haha
its not cheap, its thrifty.

wrong loomis breath :;:howdy

you won't get an argument from me on the general theory of buying quality rods though - regardless of brand

Well im not necessarily referring to the ONE rods that copied Mr. Anderson from the matrix. I am referring to the average scheels rod that costs scheels about 10 bucks to buy and they sell em for 60 plus and they break like a toothpick hahahaha.

I have a ONE rod and it snapped like a toothpick on Friday, speaking of that I gotta take it in and see if I can exchange or what their policy is now.
