Anyone want to give me some information on a new compressor particularly a rotary screw one, i have been looking at atlas copco, kaeser, quincy, sullair, Gardner, and Curtis.

Electric or engine drive ? How many CFM do you need ? They are high maintenance and spendy . I've never had an electric driven so don't know about them but I have a 250 sullair with Cat diesel and it has to run at full capacity even if I need a small supply of air. Personally , If I could get away with a piston VS rotary I'd go that route.

I would say for what your looking at you better be using it alot to justify the price. Most shops i know are turning to cordless for alot of there needs, replacing air tools. If your painting most conventional 30-60-90 gallon would be plenty with hvlp/hte paint guns. Are you using it for industrial or home garage/shop?

What machines ? Without knowing what CFM you need you won't get any sound advice at all.

I avg around 18 cfm and max right now at 31 cfm, I am looking at a 10hp because it will have plenty cfm at 90-110 cfm. The unit will have the compressor, tank, filtere and dryers in one package. Its anywhere between 8 to 17000 depending on the manufacturer. I know the 10 will be overkill but I am looking to get another pallet jig to increase my output in the future.

You'd have to pencil it out but cloning two smaller compressors is an option, The bigger compressors are about quadruple the price of what it costs to clone 2 smaller units . Then if one goes down you still have air to finish a project or whatever.

Haha , Believe it or not I have a bigger one than that that I pulled of a Gardner Denver drilling rig , It's 750 cfm with a high pressure booster build for air drilling . Has a huge radiator and an intercooled. It flattens the front tires of my backhoe when I move it. I didn't know until I had it sitting on the ground that it was high pressure . I'd sell you that one lunk. :) Some mexicans wanted it in the worst way for 5K but they couldn't get in on the load. Scrap iron to me , it sits out in the rain but always wanted to do something with it.

I have a sullair ls10-30hp that I bought that was cheap but to service it sullair wants like 3000 grand, then i need to bring power to it which is over 4 grand just for the wiring, not including exhaust air in and out of the room. The problem with this one its made to run continuously all day which in reality would not work for me since I need a compressor that can shut down when not in use. So this one would use up too much electricity and kill my electric bill. So im going to buy one that's more efficient running that won't cost me as much, im using a 7.5 ingersoll rand twin stack piston one that's on its last leg and want to get a replacement before it shits the bed. I was interested also in a variable speed emax that intrigues me but like sullair it made with Chinese crap atleast atlas and kaeser are made in Europe along with Boge that has 3 centuries between the companies.
The hard part is finding people who have first hand experience with compressor to give me an honest feedback because its a major investment that I cant afford to make the wrong decision.

I’ve had a Curtis screw on a loop system with reserve tank for extra capacity for 8.5 years now. I can’t remember the specs on the compressor, but I have no complaints. We do a yearly oil and filter service on it. Other than that, I haven’t had to touch it.

I have a 1000 gallon propane tank converted to hold air but everyone tells me that it will do more damage because of the issue of low cycling time. I'm going to still plumb the new compressor in but close it off with the ingersoll rand compressor intact in case I have issues with an unfortunate lemon. The old man keeps insisting that I just buy two heavy duty twin stack piston pumps ( yeah there are 2 but the other one blew and up because someone forgot to turn off the power and it ran non stop over the weekend) and a dryer and call it good.
But 2 heavy duty 2 stage pumps are still 2 grand a piece

Sounds like your old man knows what he is talking about . You can almost throw that much into maintenance on a screw compressor once a year if you use synthetic oil.

I have nothing to add to this thread. I thought it was about your mother and was hoping for some new pictures.

Yeah he's usually right 80 percent of the time, 😆
I just got off the phone with the old man, the amount of money to upgrade seems like a waste and the more I think about it and the set up that exists I would be better if I went and invested in those piston pumps, who know perhaps one day I can justify upgrading in the future. Because I have been racking my brain trying to convince myself that going to a rotary will improve my productivity when actuality my problem is finding good workers that want a good job.

Damn it svn you know V would be unhappy if I shared pics like that hehe
