I was at Best Buy the other day (once again having a horrible service experience - but that's another story).

I was dumbfounded at the size/scope of the "home security nook" where it seemed like a dozen social media or software companies had their own security systems on display. I was stunned (having not been in a Best Buy in a couple years that I can recall)

Must be an ###load of money to be made in that sector.

for a little over $200 I put a ring with flood lights on my the light over my garage three years ago, Pay $3 each month to store pictures.
Works great, great video and captures all that comes into my driveway including animals and those that go on street in front of house (can adjust that).
All I need for my security for now. Have nothing in house but I believe they have something for that. db

guy,

I bought my Nest camera at BB about 5 years ago. I paid $100/yr for 10 days of storage. Their camera was sensitive it would distinguish between movement and a person. It also had auto on and off so when we drove in the driveway it would turn off and when we left it would turn on.

I just bought a Wyze camera. It's not so much for security, but so I can finally answer the question of which dog ransacks the garbage while we're not home. It was $30 for one that can pan and look around. There's an SD card slot that can be used for rolling storage or It can use motion/person detection to trigger events that record 12 second clips on their server. They have a subscription service for cloud storage of longer clips. So far the motion detection and recording has worked well. The camera can be set up to automatically pan to track motion.

so which dog is the culprit?

Haha I figured that question would come. We just set it up Friday so they haven’t had much of a chance to transgress yet. I suspect they are both equally guilty of knocking it over various times, and then enjoy the spoils together.

We have a Blink system at our farm. Three outdoor cameras and hub for around $240 if I recall. Was crazy easy to set-up and pic quality is quite good.

I too am interested in setting one up for the farm. Could you describe a little further what you have please? Are the cameras wireless? What kind of range do you have with cameras? Do you need WiFi to run it?

We have a house centrally located on our farm with several outbuildings within several hundred feet or so. If I would want to set up the hub in the house where WiFi is at, how do I install cameras to shop and cold storage facility and grain bins?

Lab,

Our system currently has 3 outdoor wireless cameras. Think the model is XT2. I believe that 10 cameras is the limit for our system. It does require internet / Wi-Fi. We have BEK internet at farm. We installed the cams last fall and check them frequently and batteries still suggest strong. We can remotely control all settings and the system alerts both to my cell and son's cell. System has two-way interactive audio so we can hear and speak to anyone at farm. There is free cloud pic storage up to around 100 vids. We delete most vids and have never gone above 6% of our free storage. We have set the cams to record for 15 seconds or until motion stops. Also can set sensitivity to avoid birds, etc. Our farthest camera is approx 120 feet from hub and works well. We tried to install a cam about 600 ft from house and it did not connect. Instructions suggest that distance is limited by strength of Wi-Fi signal. Very please with our system.

Looking for some more information on security systems. Anybody install one on a farm? I’m talking a house with several buildings and bin site. House has Wi-Fi but what is the range with the cameras ?

Bek offers security systems but they are pretty expensive in my opinion.

And you have two options: You can either rent the equipment or purchase it. Bigger upfront cost but less monthly charge if you purchase equipment. But you’re on your own if there’s any issues with cameras, etc.

What’s everyone using?

We had BEK come out & give us a proposal @ farm as we have BEK internet service. The guy seemed to know his product well. At the end of the day, I couldn't justify their upfront cost as well as monthly maintenance so we installed Blink system and it meets our needs. Since then I have installed Blink at our home in Bis and it works great. The temp monitoring save our bacon last winter as we were down south & HVAC system took a dump. We can monitor the indoor temp and that likely avoided a mess for us. We use lithium (AA) batteries and system alerts when batteries are low. Change them about once a yr.

Ring floodlight cameras for this guy. 3. One over each exterior door. Just replaced the exterior lights with those. So, no new wiring to run. But, did have to remove the switch, wire it hot full time and replace the switch cover w a plate so the kids would quit flipping it off and on.
