I have hunted with a few Visuals the do seem alittle soft. But I have seen some really good ones. If it were me I would pick the bruiser Male of the litter. Bang pots and pans by his head when he eats as a pup. Is a good way to help from being guns shy.

I'm with ya horsager. I knew they were all similar breeds. My wife didn't. My friend has a vizsla pup that is absolutely nuts. For whatever reason, she thinks the dog is calm and was ok with the idea of a vizsla. I'm not going educate her. I don't go in the house til 7 or 8 any given night of the week anyway. So when it can be spent outside playing with a dog, I can't think of a better way to spend it. Plus, my wife runs or walks every day in the summer since she's off of work. Been finding some nice videos of check cord and leash training.

Kickem, I had to laugh at your post about your wife. It was literally the same story in my household.

I am probably in the minority, but I like the basic methods in "gun dog". I know it is an old book and newer methods are out there, but it works and is pretty simple to do and gives a high rate of sucess on the basics. I have only had 2 labs and a llewellin. Introduced my first lab to gunfire while playing and she was at heel at each station on the sporting clays range by 9 weeks. My experience has been that dogs that can stay inside with the family work better in the field, playing into the pack mentality I suppose. Anyway, congrats, enjoy! Soon as we get the house from lease to mortgage, the boy is getting a yellow lab, unless he changes gears yet again. My lab is in Ohio living the life of Riley, we sure miss him.

so when picking out a viszla a person should look for most outgoing/emboldened one in the bunch because they are generally "shy" as a breed?

again - just trying to learn for if/when I get the next pup of some sort

Yeah, all the viszlas I have met tend to be very timid dogs overall when compared to the GSP/GWP/Lab options we tend to see.

DM, I will second the Bismarck chapter of NAVHDA for help when it comes time to train your pup. Plus, you can also always bring her out to my place if you need somewhere to plant some pigeons, etc.

p.s. I would also suggest finding a way for her to get in the house. Viszlas and GSPs just seem to do better if they are a part of the "pack". Putting her out in the garage may very well induce mental issues, they're a needy breed to begin with and isolation won't help at all.

Already working on a kennel for inside the house. Something that gives her a place to be instead of claiming every room. Also something gag looks like a piece of furniture. She'll be inside the first few months for sure. I just need something for when we're at work.

And thank you for the offer Allen. I'll take you up on it. I've requested information from navhda but haven't received anything.

GSPs shed horrible the little hairs stick to everything and don't vacuum up.

.

Once you see the GSP start shedding, and it happens twice a year, my best advice is to give your dog a run over with the shop vac once a day. Using the upholstery attachment seems to work pretty well. Other option is to given him/her a really good bath to help remove the shedding hairs. Surprisingly, all my GSPs have grown accustom to the shop vac pretty quickly, I just suggest getting as quiet of one as you can find. Easier on my ears as well.

Or find a long hose, like 20'. Some alpaca people I sheared for used several hoses and kept the vac well away from the animal- much better for acceptance

Well hers a purdy girl puppy dog!! You should name her Libby, short for Liberal Pinko Communist.

My dogs name is Libby. She's a yellow lab. She lives in the house so I didn't need a doggie door.

Thats awesome. We'll have to get them together for a rooster beat down. It's kinda nice to know where the rest of the siblings are going.

Sounds like a plan I'll be in town the night of the 18th and pick them up on the 19th. Might have to go catch a beer or 10.

Sounds good. I'll be in Dickinson that weekend but my wife will be picking up the pup. So if you're still around Saturday evening, the garage is heated and well stocked.

I'll be officiating at the wrestling tournament. Might take it a little easier this year vs. last year. That was a rough day of blowing a whistle.

We did. She's currently sleeping on me. Dog throws us for a loop every day. Hasn't pooped in the house for over a week and she fired off three today. All while I was out ice fishing. Sorry honey.

Here's Wrigley. Climbing everything she can climb. Figured out stairs already made my parents 9 yr old gsp spend the day in her kennel.

You ever want to teach her to play ball bring her over. My dog is an absolute machine when it comes to retrieving. She will bring back whatever I ask her to. She would try to bring a Mac truck to me if she could figure out that is what I wanted from her.

I'll take you up on that offer. She met her match today when our friends brought their gsp, whose a month older than our dog, over to play. She got bullied. Gotta get her into the weight room I guess. Playing fetch has never been a game I could get a dog to play. Most likely my fault.

So have you had to build your kennel enclosure or has Wrigley found a place in your home like on the floor beside your bed ha ha. She is going to be a handle full I reckon.

There's a kennel in the house for the winter. Summer months she'll be in the kennel in the garage. We're going to put a fence up this spring so the kennel will go out to the back yard. Then we can take the leash off and let her run a bit.
