Between things like this and people that take off driving in whiteout conditions are crazy. You not only are endangering yourself but everyone else that goes out to try and find you or help you. Wake up people and think of others not just of yourself.

There would be no way I would give an interview after my screw up. What an embarrassment for a guy ice fishing for 30 years

The separation bullshit is just that - i can pull my jig up a 1/8 inch and it shows it -- my buddy with the 28 is sitting right next to me - he does the same thing -- -they both put a noise in the water and it bounces back. Who has came the farthest in the last 20 years? One of them gets this guy back to the truck without spending another benjamin.

I agree i have no problem seeing anything the guy next to me does with his flasher

It's not bullshit, it's fact. My graph ducer goes in my bobber hole for a reason. Sell your snake oil to somebody else.:D

- - - Updated - - -

2.5 inches of target ID vs 1/4" on a FLX 28. The math equals 10 TIMES better target ID.

But, if you're a mucker it really doesn't matter.

Common sense goes along way, shouldn't need all those electronic gizzos to tell ya where the hell you are at,, escpeically if you know the area, like this dude claims to have fished the lake for some 30 years.

common Sense = Bad weather, Storm coming, stay the hell home, no electronics involved.

I just wanna know why the fish is more important to risk your life for? I don't get it....

I think Vex mis-leads people a bit with their numbers. They tout the 1/2" - 1/4" target ID. If you actually look at the specs the target separation is 2.65" compared to 2.5" on most graphs...hmm. So is vex "target ID" basically a made up spec to make them look better?

I have been using an fl-18 for 15 years. The damn things are reliable and take a beating. i did also just pick-up a helix 7 for boat/atv. Next year i may have to get the ice-ducer and try it out if i can figure out all the settings. I still think its hard to beat the vex for ease of use and longevity.

When you are out on a lake like oahe and wind comes up and all you see is white i was with a guy who has lived and fished here his whole life for a living and we would have spent the night in the pickup if not for the graph and a trail to follow back. We had a few ridges to get around so it would have been a no go till you could see.

Unless you have an iphone and the piece of shit goes dead every time it even gets chilly. They can help in a pinch, but don't rely on cell phones for your only navigation, especially in winter. The one time you really need it the damn thing will be dead.

New iphones indeed SUCK when it comes to getting even remotely cold. WTF! Older iphones were very cold tolerant. PISSES ME OFF. A guy has a hard time even taking a pic now. GRRRR.

I still like both. The graph is easier for my kids to read, so they use that more than I do. But I can see fish on either. It is plain as day. The graph takes longer to setup, and often takes a minute to start reading. On my lowrance elite 7, I also have to adjust sensitivity from time to time. No biggie but an extra hassle once in awhile. I enjoy the travel on the graph. When kids are with I am not starring at my hole the entire time.

The vex is quicker, and in my case, lighter.

In the end, I can see fish easily on both, and thats what matters I guess.

When it comes to the vex it does have a lot to do with how you set up the cone. That was one of the reason I like the red bottom to the old tri beam because it made it easier to tell when the ducer was just below the bottom of the ice. So yes I would have to agree with ahab. Short make sure the duce is no more than half an inch below the bottom of the ice

I use both regularly Shorty. I jig under my graph all summer long on the back of my tiller and have it with me every time out in the winter. They both work fine, but the Vex will tell you how close the fish's nose is to the bait better every time. I use both the graph and the vex at the same time by myself every time. The graph goes in my bobber hole to see the blob sneak in after using both for 3 seasons now.

P.S. I have no sponsors or stickers on my pickup or boat.:D

Also, I wanted the graph to be the end all be all before I even bought the FLX-28. After tuning on that thing with sensitivity, ping speed, scroll speed, etc it did not live up to my expectations when it came down to the brass tacks. I gave it an honest effort for about 5 full days of ice fishing. I'll use both like a bastard, but if the bite is tough I know which one is going in the pail.

90% of the new phones are for hipsters. 3 years a go I bought a Kyocera Brigadier. Kyocera makes a line of Military spec phones and mine is one of them. Water, dust and drop proof up to 10 ft in water and onto concrete. Sapphire screen, works in the cold and I can still get 2 days out of the battery. They have discontinued my model but will definitely be getting another as it's the best phone I've ever owned.

Preparedness is necessary when venturing out on any outing, but even more so in cold weather. I have extra propane bottles, pack a bunch of food and water, 2 heaters packed incase the buddy heater takes a shit I have the sunflower head with. Ice anchors for the fish house, water, extra socks, gloves, hat, those heat pack hand warmers, a propane grill, a propane single burner stove, propane lantern, booze, radio, my phone, flash lights, and many more items.

I would like to think I would not venture out in this situation, but if it arose, I think I would be able to ride it out. Scary stuff, but don't kid yourself guys it could happen to anyone of us ice fisherman.
